By popular request, a behind-the-scenes peak at decorating the Christmas trees! 🎄

This year our team had the lovely project of decorating three of Lewisham Council’s Christmas trees — in Catford, Lewisham Town Centre and Deptford — each with its own theme inspired by the local area.

The Deptford tree had a maritime theme to reflect the area’s rich maritime history, the Catford tree was our take on a classic, traditional Christmas, and the Lewisham tree featured fruit-inspired elements to connect with Lewisham Market, which has been part of the area for generations.

Our gardener Alec hand-painted the fence panels, we organised and installed the decorations, and for the Deptford tree we worked with local artist to create a wrap-around artwork at the base of the tree featuring local landmarks.

For the Catford and Lewisham trees, our coordinator designed the boards, which we printed locally at our co-working studio, next to Lewisham station.

created the custom tree toppers — the Catford Cat for the Catford tree, the Clock Tower for the Lewisham tree, and the Anchor for the Deptford tree — which really gave each tree its unique character.

A big thank you to Milestone, whose team helped us install the toppers and taller decorations safely using their cherry picker.

Thank you to for trusting us with this project, and to everyone who stopped to look, take photos, and send kind messages — it really meant a lot.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a strong start to the New Year 🎄✨

There are still a few more days in February to complete these tasks and help ensure a bountiful fruit crop for the year ahead. ⬇️ 😀
🍎 Prune your apple and pear trees: Remove water shoots and rubbing branches, shaping them for optimal light and air circulation. 🍐
🌿 Prune fruiting bushes: Create a nice open framework on fruit bushes such as blackcurrant, gooseberries and red currants. 🍓
✂️ Prune autumn fruiting raspberries: Take the canes back to ground level. 🌱
🌳 Mulch and feed fruit trees: Remember to keep the mulch from coming in contact with the tree trunk to avoid decay. 🍑

There’s still plenty to complete in the garden for February!!! Shown below is a list of important tasks to ensure better blooms and growth in the flower garden:
🌷
1. Winter prune wisteria: Now is the time to cut shoots back to 2 or 3 buds.
2. Lift and divide snowdrops: To create more plants for new year.
3. Prune and feed roses: Take down stems to their 5th-7th bud and give them an organic feed with organic material.
4. Cut back deciduous grasses: Cutting back to ground level will allow fresh new growth to come through.
5. Mulch the flower beds: Cover any bare soil with a good layer of organic matter like compost of well-rotted manure.
6. Pot up containers: Use a variety of hardy spring bedding like primroses, wallflowers and forget-me-nots.

In February, there is still plenty to admire in our clients' gardens!
The elegant twists and turns of the contorted branches, the fascinating netted appearance of the Sophora ‘Little Baby,’ and the warm flecks of red in the Anemanthele lessoniana all bring beauty to the season.
And if that’s not enough positivity: the days are getting longer! 😀

Choosing the plants for a design is an exciting experience, especially when it's not just visually pleasing and the request has been edible and shade tolerant. Here are a few examples of what was finalised:
1) Orchid Primrose (Primula vialii): A vibrant flowering hardy perennial that copes with partial shade, what is partial shade? It is an area in the garden that receives 3 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day ideally in the morning in the midsummer.
2) Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum): Blueberry bushes thrive in acidic (ericaceous) compost. When planting directly into the garden bed, we incorporate ericaceous compost into the existing soil, allowing the blueberry plant to access both the added nutrients and those already present in the soil.
3) Bloody cranes-bill (Geranium sanguineum): A brilliant ground cover plant that outcompetes most annual weeds from late spring to late autumn. Its delicate, nectar-rich flowers are also a great food source for pollinators.
4) Woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca): There’s nothing quite like stepping into your own garden to pick a fresh strawberry—not one bred for size, but one bursting with that sweet, natural flavour.
