Early start this morning heading over to Bayworth with DeGiorgio, the general contractors delivering this stunning five bedroom detached home just outside Oxford.

Always great to get back to site and see the progress taking shape. The build is coming along brilliantly and it is exciting to watch the vision become reality step by step.

Looking good already and plenty more to come.

A brilliant afternoon at Balfour Winery with Allica Bank and Xeinadin discussing the realities facing SMEs across the UK.

One statistic that really stood out was that SMEs employ around 60% of the workforce, yet many continue to feel overlooked by traditional high street banks. Lending application refusals have risen from 10% twenty five years ago to 40% today, creating a culture where many business owners are hesitant to pursue growth opportunities.

Even more striking was hearing that 77% of SMEs would rather not grow than take on borrowing. That represents a huge missed opportunity for innovation, investment and economic growth.

It was refreshing to hear how Allica Bank are taking a different approach with a genuine appetite to support SMEs through relationship led banking and dedicated business managers who understand the challenges businesses face.

Great conversations, valuable insights and an important reminder of how crucial it is to back the businesses driving our economy forward.

A quick coffee stop at Oxford Services before heading over to a current project site in Bayworth ☕️🏗️

Great to catch up with Steve Degiorgio and discuss progress, plans and the next stages of the build. Always good to take a moment to talk through the details before getting boots on the ground.

Exciting things taking shape on this one 👀

At Designscape Consultancy, we believe good projects are not built on turnover alone. Sustainable growth comes from strong margins, smart decisions and delivering real value.

In this clip from our podcast, I share why developers and architects need to stop undervaluing their work and chasing turnover at the expense of profit, while Mark keeps it simple with one message for the industry… stop moaning.

AI is changing the way we work across the design and property industry. What could once take a week can now take seconds, whether that’s CGI creation, presentations or even video content.

At Designscape Consultancy, I see huge potential in using AI to improve efficiency and support the creative process, but it still comes with responsibility. Professional indemnity, accuracy and accountability all matter, which is why AI should support expertise rather than replace it. Every output still needs a human eye over it.

The future is exciting but it has to be approached properly.

The planning process is about far more than paperwork and timelines. Political influence, changing government priorities and local authority decision making can all have a major impact on development projects moving forward.

In this clip, I share some insight into the realities planners and developers can face when navigating approvals and local plans in today’s market.

Understanding the wider landscape is key to delivering successful developments with confidence and clarity.

Sustainability is a big talking point in the construction industry right now, but as Kingsley highlights in this clip from the Pillars of Property podcast, there’s a growing issue with “green washing”, where sustainability is used as a label rather than being backed by real, measurable action.

Genuine progress in the industry comes from transparency, accountability, and implementing sustainable practices properly, not just presenting them as a marketing message.

A really important conversation that challenges how sustainability is being approached across the sector.

A great insight shared by Mark at the South East Construction Expo 2026 discussing the importance of apprenticeships within the construction industry.

One of the biggest challenges the industry faces is attracting and retaining the next generation of skilled professionals. Conversations like these are important for creating more awareness around the opportunities construction can offer and helping young people see the long term careers available within the sector.

Supporting future talent is essential for the continued growth and future of the industry.

There’s still a huge stigma around blue collar vs white collar careers but the reality is changing fast.

People hear “I’m an architect” and assume the salary will be huge but many tradespeople are out-earning traditional office based professions by a long way.

As I mention, an architect’s salary might start around £45,000 while tradesmen I know are earning £75,000 plus.

The construction industry needs every role and success doesn’t only come from sitting behind a desk. Skilled trades are valuable, respected and in huge demand.

Trying to get a planning decision at the moment? You’re probably feeling the frustration too.

What should be an 8 week process is now dragging on for 9 months to a year in some cases and unfortunately local authority planners seem more negative than ever.

These delays don’t just affect developers. They impact businesses, homeowners, investors and the wider construction industry too.

We need a planning system that supports growth instead of slowing it down.
