Here are some before and after photos of some recent remedial works we did. Following a periodic hazardous area inspection these fuel dispenser cable glands were found to be incorrectly installed thereby negating the ATEX protection of the electrical enclosure. The armour of the cable was insufficiently clamped by the gland and outer serving stripped back too far. This lead to armour dropping out of the gland creating a potential ignition source of sparking between extraneous conductive parts at different potentials. The outer serving being stripped back too far has lead to an imperfect seal negating the ingress protection rating. Both of these issues have also provided a potential flame path from the enclosure to the surrounding atmosphere. This is potentially very dangerous and required immediate attention to rectify. We resolved this issue by re-terminating the cables with Hawke Universal glands. Whilst these are quite expensive they are the industry leader for ensuring perfect integrity of EX (bd) (be) enclosures.

This is another foam proportioning system from a waste energy plant. We installed the electrics for the system with Knowsley SK Ltd who designed and built it. This system ensures the correct percentage of foam to water ratio is injected into the fire water flow. This foam solution is then pumped where needed, either to sprinkler heads, hydrants or canons to fight potential fires. The clip at the end shows foam solution being fed to a water canon over the main waste pit at the plant. The system was designed for installation in a limited space and also incorporated a back up generator complete with automatic transfer switch which will ensure operation of the system even in a power outage.

This was a pair of foam proportioning systems we installed at a plastics manufacturer. These systems mix foam concentrate with water to provide a foam solution to fight fires from various devices (fire hydrants, water cannons, sprinkler systems etc..) These systems ensure the correct percentage of water/foam for the particular type of fire its designed to fight. As part of the client specifications it was all wired in enhanced protection flame resistant cable. Great working alongside Knowsley SK once again.

Another fantastic win for Bury RUFC under 14s against Eccles. Score was 12-40. Makes a welcome change watching it in the glorious sunshine instead of freezing on the sidelines! This follows on from the team getting through to the Lancs Cup semi finals after their win against Preston Grasshoppers last week. You’re on a roll boys! Keep it up! 👏

Here’s a before and after shot of a new emergency stop button we recently replaced alongside rewiring of the old mineral insulated cable. Both the old button and cable had deteriorated so we upgraded them to ensure continued functionality and safety.

These issues were flagged during our regular hazardous area inspection for our client, a gas supplier. Any electrical lighting or circuits within a hazardous area must conform to ATEX standards for each category of hazardous area. In accordance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) these circuits must be regularly tested to ensure their safe operation.

Dangerous substances can be found in nearly all workplaces and include solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases, dust from machining or sanding, pressurized gases, and substances corrosive to metal. These pose risks of fire, explosions, and corrosion. DSEAR imposes duties on companies to protect people from these risks.

Electrical services and systems are often required in environments with dangerous substances, but they must be installed, maintained, and tested by appropriately qualified electricians. The HSE can impose significant fines for non-compliance. For example, in December last year, Bio Dynamic (UK) was fined £304,500 and ordered to pay £229,988 in costs last year after an incident in which sparks from a grinder ignited flammable gases, causing a tank explosion. Two employees suffered life-changing injuries. The HSE inspector stated it was remarkable that they weren’t killed.

At Zenlec Ltd, we specialize in identifying, risk assessing, and managing electrical systems in hazardous areas. We can guide you on your legal obligations under DSEAR, inspect processes and products, and advise on hazardous area classifications.

Feel free to reach out for an assessment or advice on DSEAR regulations.

Was great working with the guys from Knowsley SK yesterday carrying out a few tweaks to an ATEX rated foamtronics panel at a solvent recycling plant. We previously wired together the components of the panel in the workshop. It's great to see the work we do there installed on site.

Here are some photos of a project we completed towards the end of last year. A lighting and HVAC installation for an office block in Manchester city centre. This was a galvanised conduit containment system and 90+ light fittings along with all the supplies for the heating, ventilation and air con. Great working with Blok Projects Ltd and Air Conditioning Design Limited.

Spent last week in Yeovil at P&R Hurt renewing our CompEx 7 & 8 qualification.

CompEx is a globally recognised certification program designed for professions working in hazardous areas particularly where explosive atmospheres, such as flammable gases, vapours, or dust, may be present.

It’s all about ensuring that workers have the knowledge and skills to safely carry out electrical work in environments where there’s a risk of explosions.
The CompEx certification focuses on areas such as:
• Understanding hazardous zones
• Safe installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment in these zones
• Risk management and compliance

CompEx 7 & 8 are specific certifications which focus on ensuring workers have the necessary skills to safely work in explosive atmospheres in industries like oil and gas, petrochemicals, and anywhere flammable materials are present. It’s a 5 day course with 2 days of assessment.

Electricity can kill. Therefore it’s important that electricians working on petrol stations have the correct qualifications. If electrical equipment is not correctly installed and maintained where a flammable atmosphere exists there is a very real risk of death. Petrol stations are unique from any other hazardous area industry as the facilities are generally seen as a retail shop not a facility that stores and sells flammable fuels. In turn, we are encouraging the public to enter facilities where flammable atmospheres exist and actually operate the equipment.

Therefore, it’s vital that petrol station owners ensure that the people working on site hold the correct qualifications and are also properly insured. Work on petrol stations is not covered on most standard insurance policies. Using properly trained contractors will help prevent costly accidents and downtime.

As well as having nearly 25 years’ experience in the industry we've also held CompEx 7 & 8 for 20 years. In addition, Zenlec are fully insured to work on all such hazardous sites including petrol stations, fuel depots and oil refineries.
