Wheel Straightening – What Actually Happens?
A buckled wheel doesn’t always need replacing. In many cases, it can be straightened and brought back within, or very close to, the manufacturer’s tolerances.
The first step is removing the tyre so the wheel can be properly inspected.
We then measure the wheel to find the high and low spots and work out exactly where it has distorted. The affected area is heated in a controlled way before the wheel is gradually worked back into shape using the hydraulic rams on our wheel straightening machine.
The wheel is checked and measured throughout the process rather than simply being pushed until it looks straight.
A buckled wheel can cause more problems than just a vibration through the steering wheel. Depending on how badly it is damaged, it can contribute to:
- Uneven or premature tyre wear
- Difficulty balancing the wheel correctly
- Air leaks around the tyre bead
- Extra stress on wheel bearings and suspension components
- Vibration through the steering wheel or vehicle
- MOT failure if the wheel is excessively distorted or considered unsafe
Not every damaged wheel can or should be repaired, but we can successfully straighten a large percentage of the buckled wheels we see.
