The outside lights at a local nursery are officially back online ⏱️➡️🔢

We were called into a local nursery because their old mechanical time switch had officially given up the ghost. To spice things up, it was also hiding some exposed single insulation behind the scenes. Definitely not ideal when you're managing a building full of curious toddlers! 🫣

We stripped it back, made everything 100% safe, and upgraded them to a sleek digital unit.

The best part? It’s now miles easier for the nursery staff to adjust the timings for the outdoor play areas and security lights. No more wrestling with a heavy, stiff dial to get the clock aligned! 🕒✨

Pulled the main fuse today to dismantle an old consumer unit, only to find a hidden, live supply cable feeding the RCD for the socket circuits. Turns out the house was a former cannabis farm and the previous tenants had bypassed the meter.

One little buzz later.. Zap ⚡️Lesson learned. Always always carry out safe isolation! Test and test again. You never know what kind of cowboy has been on the job before you 🔌💥

Stay safe out there!

Quick question for the sparky community

Does anyone else making a side hustle out of 'board upgrades'? ⚡️

I’ve been stripping out some top-tier circuit protection from recent consumer unit replacements. It feels like a waste to bin high-spec gear like Hager, Schneider, and Type A Wylex stuff when it’s still in great nick.

I’m starting to list these individually on eBay. For those of you already doing this:

Any tips or tricks for getting the best price?

What brands do you find sell the fastest?

Also, if anyone here is looking for specific ratings to finish off a board, drop me a DM. Happy to do a deal for the lot or individual units before they hit the auction. 🛠️📦

New Home, New Standards: Essential Electrical Upgrade ⚡🏠

A customer recently moved into a new property and, following an unsatisfactory report during the purchase, asked us to modernize their electrical system. The main goal was to move the consumer unit to a better location and ensure the entire home had full RCD protection.

Strategic Relocation: The original board was tucked away in an awkward, hard-to-reach spot under the stairs. We relocated it through the wall into the garage, making it easily accessible for the homeowners.

Fire Safety Bonus: While moving the unit, we eliminated a serious hazard. The old board was made of combustible plastic; under the stairs, a fault could potentially block the home's main exit. We replaced it with a non-combustible metal enclosure.

Advanced Protection: We upgraded the system to include Type A RCBOs, providing the requested RCD protection for every circuit, plus integrated Surge Protection to safeguard the home's electronics.

The Result:
A clean, compliant installation that is easy to access and built to modern safety standards. Moving from an awkward plastic unit to a featured metal board in the garage offers both convenience and vital peace of mind.

🏠 Is your property ready for the future? The "Electrical Bible" just got an update!

Today, the UK officially released Amendment 4 of the Wiring Regulations. While it might look like just another orange book, it’s actually a major roadmap helping the UK reach its Net Zero goals by making our buildings smarter and greener.

Most importantly, it changes how we keep your family and your business safe as technology evolves.

Why this matters for your property:

The Net Zero Transition: As we move toward a greener future, this update provides the first dedicated safety standards for Stationary Battery Storage. If you’re looking at solar energy to lower your bills and carbon footprint, we now have the official blueprint to install those batteries safely in your home or business. 🔋🌍

Modern Connectivity: We’re seeing more "Smart" setups where security and lighting are powered through data cables (Power over Ethernet). These new regs ensure these high-tech systems are installed without the risk of overheating or interference. 💻

Future-Proofing Your Investment: When we sign off on your project using these new standards, it means your property is compliant with the absolute latest safety tech in the UK—offering long-term protection for your family, your staff, and your livelihood.

Keeping you safe isn’t just a job—it’s about staying on top of the latest science to protect what matters most. Time for me to get back to the books! 📖⚡

In a fire station in Livermore, California, a single light bulb has been burning almost continuously since 1901. It stands as a testament to American manufacturing from a time before companies planned for things to break.

Out with the old, in with the... white? This image captures the evolution from the distinctive orange sodium lights to the current cooler, brighter LEDs.

The question isn't just if we use LEDs, but what colour? Should we select a warmer LED that mimics the cosy, old sodium look or stick with the crisp, clear white for better visibility?

Which street light vibe do you prefer for your neighbourhood?

Poll:
❤️Team Sodium (Replicate the Warm Glow)
👍Team LED (Stick with the Cool White)
