As the days grow shorter and the evenings become colder, it's crucial to ensure your smoke alarms are functioning properly.
1) Replace batteries in all smoke alarms if they are more than 12 months old.
Use high-quality batteries for optimal performance. Note some models are fitted with 10 year lithium batteries, these cannot be replaced.
2) Press the test button on each alarm to ensure it sounds loudly.
If an alarm doesn’t sound, replace the unit immediately.
3) Check Placement
Ensure alarms are installed in key areas, this varies depending on the layout of your home, however, as a basic measure, all escape routes, ie landing and corridors, should have alarms sited in suitable locations.
4) Dust and debris can affect performance. Gently vacuum or wipe down the alarms to keep them clean.
5) Consider upgrading if your smoke alarms are over 10 years old, consider replacing them with new models that may offer enhanced features, such as interconnected alarms and smart technology.
