Permitted cable route zones ✅
How should your cables be installed to accordance of BS7671 ?
What is the purpose ?
1. Protect the cable from damage from such as like of screws & nails penetrating
2. Protect the homeowner or contractors who have penetrated the cable !
Underneath will be a few options from how to install cables in accordance to BS7671 ….
A. Did you know accordance to BS7671 that if we bury a cable deeper that 50 mill into the wall it requires no added protection although that isn’t quite accurate as cables in a special location I.e a bathroom would need a RCD furthermore on the time scale I can’t see any homeowners drilling a 2inch screw to hang a picture or my apprentice taking the time to chase a wall that deep that could potentially ruin the structural integrity of the building
B. In the real world I.e working in peoples homes it is much likely we will be installing at a much shallower depth and this requires us to work within BS7671 again and that is we are given permitted wiring zones to work within (horizontally, vertically & 150mm from a ceiling) which is shown on the pictures below.
B(ii). We also are required if burying cable at a shawoller depth we require additional protection which is a 30mA RCD which also must align in accordance to the permitted wiring zones in order to work together and to comply !
C. Mechanical protection against damage sufficient enough to prevent pe*******on from such as the likes of nails, screws etc
So this means ! Plastic capping is not a form of mechanical protection which most people think !!
Methods of mechanical protection as follows …
Trunking, steel conduit, swa etc however these are not suitable for the homeowners property !
Round oval conduit fixed with 18th edition fire rated suitable fixings would deem sufficient.
I hope this helps !
As a general install we are complied already to install dual split load RCD consumer units !
