FIGURE STUDY - pt 2

Last one of the evening! I’ve been quite productive tonight with these figure studies, made a little easier by sticking to my A5 sketchbook and resisting the urge to get bogged down in details or overthink the finished result.

I’m really enjoying this approach, so I’ll definitely keep practising. It’s great fun and very rewarding! 😊

FIGURE STUDIES.

One of my colleagues mentioned this morning that the loose figure studies I had done previously are some of her favourite paintings. It inspired me to go home and have another go at a few more.

These are studies inspired by the work of Tansu Özmen, whose work I greatly admire, rather than my own original compositions. I’m particularly drawn to his loose approach to figures, atmosphere and the way he suggests so much without getting caught up in the detail.

That’s something I’m trying to embrace too — not overworking things, trusting the process and letting the watercolour do some of the work.

I’m still very much learning with this style, but I’m really enjoying the freedom it gives me. I hope there’s something in one of these that you like.😊

So, this is the last of my recent ‘Whimsy’ series. I’ve really enjoyed taking a more relaxed, less pressured approach to these watercolours and simply enjoying the process. I hope they’ve inspired you to have a go too! 😊

Continuing with my recent ‘Whimsy’ theme, here’s a piece I finished today. I’m really pleased with the sense of atmosphere and the way the colours have come together in this one. There’s something about the overall mood that I particularly like. I hope you like it too. 😊

As you may know, I’ve recently become really interested in loose figure watercolour studies, so for this piece I decided to follow an online tutorial by Michael Solevyer.

It didn’t turn out quite as well as his piece, but I’m pretty happy with this first attempt! I really enjoyed the process and picked up some great tips along the way. If this style of loose, expressive painting appeals to you too, I thoroughly recommend checking out his work and tutorials. 😊

So, it’s my first night back home after a recent business trip and my first chance to paint again in familiar surroundings. I fancied doing something a little more whimsical this time, and I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. I hope you like it too. 😊

I’ve included the original painting, along with a matted and framed version, and finally shown in an imaginary setting to give you an idea of how it might look on display.

Painted on A4 Baohong 100% cotton, 140lb/300gsm cold-pressed fine grain paper using Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours. 🎨

So, my time away on a business trip hasn’t been completely misspent! I’ve tried to keep my hand in each day, squeezing in either a quick figure study, which I’ve posted, or an abstract landscape or two whenever I’ve had the chance. Here’s a little collage of some of those abstract pieces. 😊
