If you've been overcharged or treated badly by a locksmith, you're not on your own, and there are clear steps to take next. We'll support you where we can. Here are four steps from the Certified Locksmiths & Security (CLS) scams guide, in the order we'd suggest:

1. Keep any evidence you have: photos, receipts, text messages.
2. Ask for a formal invoice, even after the visit.
3. Report it to us at CLS.
4. Report it to Trading Standards or Citizens Advice, and for more serious cases consider Action Fraud.

We take reports of locksmith concerns, and our community of certified locksmiths thinks companies that break the law should face the law.

One habit worth getting into: when a locksmith turns up, ask to see their licence before they start.

Every Certified Locksmiths & Security (CLS) member carries a digital licence with their name, licence number and expiry date, and you can check it online in the time it takes them to get their tools out. A certified locksmith won't mind being asked. They'll expect it.
