Two iconic statues from Birmingham are now on the next leg of their journey.

After 10 years in storage with Birmingham city council, statues of James Watt and Joseph Priestley have been transported by Allelys from Perrybar to Bletchley where they will undergo refurbishment before being re-installed in 2026.

The 2te and 3te statues were securely packed for transport before being loaded using a hiab and forklift combination.

We look forward to seeing these two statues back in place this year.

Successfully completed removal of damaging cement render from the gable at Cromford Mills Derbyshire, an important Grade 1 listed building forming part part of the Derwent Valley World heritage site.
The stonework beneath the hard impervious render required considerable consolidation involving re bedding loose stones, deep packing and re pointing in a carefully formulated Hot lime Mortar in order to create a stable facade. Removal of badly degraded timber cross ties weakening the structure was required to give further stability, the positions of these were subsequently highlighted with the installation of tile creasing. New code 6 Sand cast lead was installed to weathering surfaces and the retention/protection of Bat access holes into the structure completed the works.
Removal of the render and works carried out have retained and highlighted the historic imprints of previous openings and access routes through the gable which existed prior to a major fire and the resultant demolitions and lowering of the adjacent roof line, at high level the retained timber still shows scorching and fire damage.

West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library Case Study

Midland Masonry were selected for the, Grade II listed, West Bromwich Town Hall masonry repairs due to our extensive knowledge and experience in conservation and restoration of stonework, brickwork and terracotta. We were also tasked with cleaning and revitalising the masonry facades using the steam Doff and Torc systems and paint removal from brickwork to the rear elevations. We supplied and replaced many highly decorative eroded arch voussoir bricks, cornice and decorative band bricks that were unique to the building. Where repointing was required we developed various different mixes of lime mortar to carefully match each elevation which had varying colours from black on the front, High Street, elevation through to cream on the rear elevation.

Main contractor Morgan Sindall, oversaw the restoration of the Grade II listed Town Hall and Central Library which also included roof and window repairs/replacements.
