An old mains voltage outside garden lights install is tripping the electrics may be able be repurposed!
We tested the wiring, checked the junction boxes and retrofitted 24 volt safe lighting (spike lights) for a customer. We fitted and outdoor junction box with new transfomers and new spike lights which are brighter than the old ones. Now much safer and won't trip the house electrics. This is a much simpler and cost effective way to light your garden.

This fault was only found as part of upgrading a Consumer Unit and EICR. Live and Neutral conductors were round the wrong way in an outside socket πŸ€” Probably been that way for many years and functioned normally. An RCD will pick up those faults...

So yesterday's investigation was for a RCD tripping with outside lights. Lots of failed 230v spike lights and we found an ants nest inside an Wiska junction box. So will be reusing what we can upgrading a few junction boxes and replacing and converting the installation with safe 24v LED spike lights.

Are you considering the cheap 'plugin' solar!

Government is suggesting people use plugin solar purchased from stores to reduce their bills, payback in 7 years or so?.

As we know these plugin solar systems aren't yet legal in the UK albeit you can purchase them from Amazon, plug them into a socket an feed your home.

The IET are now urging people to get their houses checked before considering using themπŸ€”

This is definitely wise recommendations:

- MOST RCDs (safety deivices) in houses will fail to work , most aren't designed to be bidirectional and are affected by DC currents.
- There are serious risks to trades without appropriate labelling won't expect circuits to be live when isolated. Islanding protection isn't always included in some cheap devices.
- Old wiring a fails in socket circuits may cause overloading and ultimately a fire πŸ”₯ risk.
