Our latest case study is a modestly sized rear single-storey extension, which has been carried to completion by the self-builder client to an impressive specification. This Hempcrete extension is small but perfectly formed.

Our team carefully detailed this small project and packed a plethora of natural materials into its small form.

Our team firmly believe that we have a responsibility to prioritise retrofit of existing building stock, rather than demolition and rebuild. When retrofitting buildings, the use of h**pcrete and other bio-based materials is ideal for a range of applications, due to their hygroscopic, vapour-permeable properties. In fact, the original use of h**pcrete, and still one of the most important, is in the repair and upgrading of heritage buildings.

Established in 2019, UK Hempcrete's in-house design practice, Studio Bio, was born out of a strong industry demand for architectural designers with a specialist knowledge of bio-based construction and technical detailing of h**pcrete buildings.

Our Practice Lead, Alex Sparrow, heads up our growing team, designing building envelopes from a material-first perspective, to ensure that the implications of building with h**pcrete are considered from the very first drawing.
