Not every structural concern in a tree requires removal. At the Heights of Abraham, the team recently installed a Cobra cable bracing system as an alternative to felling, retaining a tree that, with the right intervention, can remain standing safely.
Cable bracing involves the use of a flexible restraint system made of either synthetic fibre ropes or steel cables. The aim is to reduce dynamic loading on potentially weak structures by preventing excessive movement and thus reducing the probability of failure of one or more structurally weak elements. The operation is normally accompanied by pruning to reduce the loading on weak structures in the tree.

We prefer to use non-invasive systems like Cobra, as the tree is not damaged during installation and the synthetic fibre will generally allow more dynamic movement of the tree parts, which can stimulate supporting adaptive growth.

A good arboricultural report does not just document what is there, it sets out what needs to happen next and why.

Thompson Consultancy carried out a tree condition and decay detection survey across a group of mature Beech trees at a private farm, using Visual Tree Assessment methodology alongside sonic tomography to establish the extent of internal decay within the lower stems of two trees. The findings informed a clear set of prioritised management recommendations - including crown reduction, Cobra brace installation and selective removals where structural condition was assessed as poor.

Thompson Tree Services then delivered the works on the ground. The video shows the team climbing and dismantling one of the trees identified for removal, working through the canopy section by section in a setting that required care throughout. Survey to delivery, managed under one roof.

Early start for the team at the Heights of Abraham this week. Site set up and operations underway before the attraction opens to the public at 10:00am.

A general tree safety programme across the site: deadwood removal, aerial inspections and Cobra brace installation. All works had to be completed and the site vacated before the attraction opened.

Surveying a large tree stock at a site such as Wollaton Park rarely looks the same from one tree to the next.

A consultant will encounter a wide range of features, pests and wood decay fungi, each requiring interpretation in the context of the tree, its surroundings and the targets nearby. It involves reading the body language of the tree; understanding what a particular growth pattern, wound response or fungal fruiting body is telling you about what is happening.

The skill is in balancing the likelihood and severity of potential failure. Knowing when to act in a proportional and responsible manner where the evidence justifies it and when not to if a risk is deemed tolerable.

These photos that Phil took during a recent survey give a sense of what that looks like on the ground.

Congratulations James!

James has passed his HGV test - a brilliant achievement and a well-earned addition to his skillset.

Passing his HGV is a significant piece of CPD for James. Supporting the team to grow their skills and qualifications is something we are committed to at Thompsons.

Having more of the team qualified to drive HGV strengthens what we can deliver for our clients and supports the growth we are seeing across the business.

Ash dieback at stage four compromises the structural integrity of the tree throughout, making the wood brittle and unpredictable and climbing unsafe.

With restricted access also ruling out the use of a MEWP, the Jekko was the clear solution, providing safe, controlled access to dismantle the trees in a manner that other methods could not. Traffic management was implemented throughout to protect both the team and passing vehicles.

These ash trees were removed for highway safety. At this stage of the disease, failure posed a direct risk of strike to moving vehicles on the road below.

Our Site Health and Safety Audits cover everything from risk assessment briefings and PPE checks to plant inspections, emergency planning, and work quality against job specifications and BS3998. It’s not a box-ticking exercise, this is how we make sure every supervisor is set up to succeed, every team member goes home safe, and every completed job meets the high professional standard of safety and quality our reputation is built on.

Regular auditing means:
• Risks are identified and managed before they become incidents
• Equipment and PPE are fit for purpose, every time
• Emergency plans are in place, not just on paper
• Work quality stays consistent, whatever the site or crew, including our sub-contractors

Compliance is a commitment to our people, our clients, and our industry and audits are one of the processes that help us deliver that commitment.

Woodland creation and hedgerow planting deliver long term benefits for landowners, from biodiversity gains and carbon sequestration through to land value and eligibility for environmental schemes.

Thompson Environment recently completed a package of woodland creation, hedgerow planting and stock fencing for a private landowner, managing the full scope of works under one contract. Tree guards, stakes, stock fencing and a new field gate were all installed as part of the scheme, giving the new planting the best possible start and the site the infrastructure to support it.

If you are a landowner considering woodland creation or hedgerow planting, Thompson Environment can manage the full package from planting through to fencing and ground preparation.

Management works to a mature Holm Oak at Wollaton Park; crown cleaning, deadwood removal, crown lifting and selective reduction away from surrounding structures.

Works of this nature are as much about the long-term health and structural integrity of the tree as they are about managing the immediate risk. A well-maintained Holm Oak, properly managed, will continue to be an asset to a site like this for generations.

Thompson Environment recently completed a comprehensive ground works and landscaping package at North Lees Campsite, delivering a scheme that balances practical infrastructure with environmental responsibility.

The project involved the creation of five hard standing campervan bays with electric hookups and ten hard standing car parking spaces, all surfaced using a SUDS permeable paving system to manage surface water drainage sustainably. Works also included an extension to the access road width, improved surface water drainage infrastructure, kerbing, and full electrical infrastructure installation.

Alongside the hard landscaping, the team delivered a full soft landscaping package; top soiling, seeding, hedge translocation, hedge planting, and biodiversity net gain planting to satisfy the project's BNG requirements.

A project that demonstrates the full breadth of what Thompson Environment delivers - from groundworks and drainage through to habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement, under one contract.
