Baptisia 'Lemon Meringue' is a member of the pea family. This truly is a drought resistant, easy care plant that not even slugs or snails seem to be interested in. It caught my eye on a visit to Moore's Garden Centre 4 years ago and it was just 2 shoots in a 9cm pot. It's best to cultivate from seed or cuttings with division not recommended.

25 yrs ago, on a visit to Barnsdale Gardens, my mum bought this Rosa 'Geoff Hamilton'. I planted it near to the house so it could be viewed from window. The rose bush is definitely easy care and apart from some mulch it has never needed any pesticides or fungicides. It also has very few thorns making pruning easier. The only downside is the blooms don't like periods of wet weather. Mum died in 2018 and the rose bush has pride of place in the garden.

Syringa 'Josee' a compact, reblooming Lilac which I purchased at Brooksby Plant Centre when I was a horticultural student there back in 2002. At the base I planted a herbaceous Clematis to grow amongst the branches and has blue flowers from mid summer to autumn. You can see it pushing through the top on the left side of the first photo

it's a good feeling when the clients are very impressed by my wife's and my work ethics, attention to detail and methodical way we completed the project. We both were suffering from a heavy cold the last 2 days but we stuck with it and got the job done. I had allowed 20 working days for completion and finished 3 days early by working longer days, as well as coming just under budget. The designer's remit stated minimal disruption to the clients and they were able to remain parking on there drive every night to charge their EV for all but 2 nights. Credit must go to my wife Audra for emptying the 12 bulk bags of gravel, by herself, onto the gravel grids as I laid them out. Apart from the main parking area the design included a porcelain path to the front door, a gravel area in front of the house for a bench, a paved area for the bins, metal edging to form planting beds and a small sleeper retaining wall in front of the garage at the roadside.

Foxton project nearing completion. The topography of the parking area has been a challenge to screed with the grano fines. I choose the smaller grids so they would form to the different gradients. The gravel is 14mm Nene, supplied by William Hercocks and is probably the most widely used golden gravel in the Melton and Rutland area. Its irregular shape means it locks together well and suits these gravel grids

Final length of steel edging Installed today. I have prepared a small area ready to receive 8 bags of gravel tomorrow morning while Audra has been digging the borders. After the hardcore is graded and compacted I screed a 40mm layer of granno dust on top which I wet with a hose and compact to form a nice even surface for the gravel grids to be laid on. I have been looking for a long time for a beige coloured gravel grid and finally found a supplier called Nida Gravel based near Kettering. The total area to grid is 170m².

2 weeks into a front garden project in Foxton working to a design by Rebecca Winship. With the excavation work complete and skips gone I'm now fabricating and installing metal edging to define borders and parking area. I purchased my 100 x 5mm mild steel flat bar and 20 x 2mm mild steel tube for 12mm from F.H. Brundle who have good prices and delivers in 48hrs. I weld 60mm lengths of the tube and weld to the flat bar at 1m spacings which have 12mm rebar pins put in as anchors. The lengths of flat are joined with a welded 60mm wide late, cut off from the flat bar and 60mm length of 40mm angle iron welded on corners. I can get large flowing curves with 100 x 5mm flat bar easily, for tighter curves I use 3mm. The welder I use is a gasless mig suitable for outdoor use, especially in windy conditions. I did have training as an agricultural student in gas and arc welding but mig is easier to get the hang of, but make sure you use the correct gloves and welding mask/ helmet, preferably a light activated welding helmet.

A small clump of Cowslips, that self seeded in my rockery, have decided to be different from the rest. Is it a hybrid or a sport and how should I name it?
