Kirby Architecture

Kirby Architecture Kirby Architecture is an architectural practice with experience spanning over two decades.

We are based in Suffolk but have projects throughout the UK & beyond. Every project from barn conversion, office building, residential extension, hotel, or place of worship, is approached with the same passion - to see people live, work and enjoy the spaces we create.

Great to see the progress at Dandy Hall Cottage during our recent site visit.

The new family dwelling replaces a former farm worker’s cottage, with the design taking its cues from the simple forms and material character of Suffolk’s rural and agricultural buildings.

Now that the structure and roof are well advanced, the proportions and spaces developed at the drawing board are really beginning to come to life.

The steeply pitched clay tiled roof establishes the strong rural form, while the large north facing garden facing openings and feature glazed gable will bring natural light deep into the house and create a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the open mplan spaces are taking shape, with the vaulted first floor rooms and exposed roof geometry already giving a real sense of the character of the finished home.

Still plenty to do, but a really exciting stage of the build — and always rewarding to see a project move from drawings and visualisations into a real building.

Through July, we have had the privilege of having year 10 students from local schools undertake work experience at Kirby Architecture.

Each student was given the same design brief: to create a pavilion for St John’s Meadow in Metfield. It was great to see how every student approached the project differently, producing imaginative concepts and communicating their ideas through beautiful hand-drawn sketches.

Well done to all of the students for their hard work, positivity & willingness to learn. The future is bright!

We are delighted to have recently submitted a listed building consent application for the conversion of this beautiful agricultural barn, set within the curtilage of a listed building in the Suffolk countryside.

The proposals have been carefully developed to work with and respect the existing building fabric, historic character, and architectural details of the barn, whilst creating a practical and welcoming family home for modern living.

Projects like this are always about striking the right balance between conservation and change, ensuring that the building’s heritage significance is preserved whilst securing its long-term future through a sensitive new use.

It has also been a pleasure working with such a lovely family who share a genuine passion for the building and who will be undertaking much of the construction work themselves.

We look forward to following the journey as this beautiful Suffolk barn begins its next chapter.

We recently carried out a site visit to one of our new homes with this one set within the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

This house has been entirely prefabricated in Poland by and will take just 10 weeks to construct on site — dramatically reducing programme time, improving quality control, and minimising disruption during construction.

The prefabricated approach has also delivered significant value for our Clients, achieving an estimated 30% saving in overall construction costs compared to traditional build methods.

At Kirby Architecture, we are increasingly applying modern prefabricated construction techniques across many of our projects — from residential extensions and barn conversions through to commercial office spaces — helping Clients achieve faster, smarter and more efficient buildings.

A fantastic few days in Tirana, Albania for the Kirby Architecture team on our latest architectural CPD trip.

From exploring bold contemporary architecture and leafy green historic streets, to enjoying amazing food, drinks, sunshine and a genuinely welcoming city — it was the perfect mix of inspiration, learning & having some fun.

Great people, great weather and a city full of energy and creativity. Tirana surprised us in all the right ways.

Well done to our lad - Andy Johnson.

Andy has just passed his Part 3 qualification to be able to now register with the ARB as an architect.

He has worked hard through his studies & we are very proud of him. His final submission was an exceptional piece of analysis.

Thank you also to those who have helped & directed Andy through his studies.

Top work AJ!

A new project instruction brings a new chapter for this historic Suffolk barn as we convert it into a new family home.

With April marking the start of the ecological survey season (running through to September), now is the ideal time to move forward with barn conversions. From bat activity surveys to habitat assessments, these early steps are essential in unlocking the full potential of rural buildings.

Sensitive design, careful planning, and respect for the existing fabric ensure these structures can be brought back to life for modern use — without losing their story.

Thinking about converting a barn this year? Now is the time to act. Please do get in touch & we can guide you the steps.

We have recently submitted a planning application on behalf of Coastline & Country Homes for two new two-bedroom homes in Kessingland, Suffolk.

The proposals sit with an established residential area on an underused open plot. The new homes are stepped in plan and height to follow the existing estate grain & contours.

The proposals have been developed using a SIPs system to enhance the overall building energy efficiency performance whilst also dramatically reducing the on-site build-time.

Kirby Architecture attended the official opening of the new clubhouse over the weekend.

We have been working with the Club for many seasons and love nothing more than to see communities using & enjoying the spaces that we create.

It was also great to have a celebratory beer with Paul Fishpool from who we have had the chance to work with on the project.

We look forward to working with the Club on future projects.
