Dylan Walker formed Artizans of Wood in 2013.

Built by Artizans is a team of natural builders based just outside Rogate in West Sussex. We believe in building sustainably – treading lightly on your landscape but delivering homes and structures that suit modern-day living. Our buildings combine timber frames with straw bale or wool insulation and lime plaster, creating results that are tactile, natural, sustainable and inspiring. While the met

hods might be traditional the finished spaces are warm, light, bright and contemporary. Timber in the round makes for great design details too – think balconies, verandas, pergolas, hand rails, railings and much more. Used indoors or out, the natural shapes of the wood blend beautifully with both contemporary and traditional settings. Roundwood timbers are also ideal for creating sheds, barns, workshops and shelters that stand out from the crowd. Their natural shape means they never look out of place though no matter whether they’re sheltering animals in a field or passengers waiting for a bus. Add shakes to the roof and weave or cladding to the sides and you have a unique, sustainable structure that will serve its purpose for many, many years to come. He learned traditional timber framing techniques and construction skills as an apprentice to Ben Law, progressing to become first senior framer and then project manager. Dylan has worked in the construction industry for over 30 years and has focused on working with timber in the round and creating more sustainable buildings since 2006. His combination of traditional skills and modern construction industry standards enables Built by Artizans to work effectively either alongside a main contractor or as lead contractors in their own right. Dylan works with a team of skilled craftsmen, all passionate about working with timber, creating buildings fit for our future and training the next generation. Training with Built by Artizans

The Mead Hall at Ufton Court — complete.

Over the winter we were asked to create something extraordinary: a bespoke mead hall to become the heart of outdoor educational learning at Ufton Court.

Designed and created by the Artizans team led by Dylan to encompass an imaginative wish list, every piece was crafted by hand — from raising the sweet chestnut round wood frame to laying thousands of timber shingles. From the first post raised to the final shingle nailed on the ridge, this build was a true labour of love.

From the moment we met the site genie Scott, the whole Artizans team were really excited — and that made all the difference. A project like this only comes alive when everyone around it believes in it.

The result? A hall full of character, craft, and stories waiting to be told. We couldn't be prouder.
