One is a few hundred pounds. Another is several times more. So which one represents the best value?
The answer isn't necessarily the cheapest and this is because you may not be comparing the same thing.
A set of drawings, a planning application, a fully resolved design, interior design, tendering, contract administration and support throughout the build are very different levels of service.
And everything that hasn't been decided before the builder starts has to be decided by someone. Often, that means making decisions quickly, on site, when changes are harder and more expensive.
