Site speak, explained (part 1).

Ever heard a builder mention needles or padstones and just nodded along? Here's what they mean:

Prop: an adjustable steel post that holds a load up temporarily.
Needle: a steel beam passed through a wall and propped each side, carrying the masonry above while an opening is formed.
U-head: the U-shaped fitting on top of a prop that cradles a beam.
Padstone: a solid block under the end of a beam that spreads its load into the wall.
Wind post: a steel post built into a masonry wall to resist sideways loads such as wind.

The finished external works.

The new extension on this hotel project is complete, and so is everything around it: new brickwork, paving, an access ramp to the new entrance, a handrail to the client's specification, fencing and landscaping.

Groundworks, drainage and landscaping are all part of what we deliver, so the outside gets finished properly too.

An 80-tonne crane is going to sit on top of this basement. So we propped it.

On site at Verity House in Leeds city centre: the whole basement propped so the crane can come in and take the roof off. Five days, nine lads, goal achieved.

Temporary works, explained.

Before a wall comes out or a basement takes a load, something has to hold the structure up. That's temporary works: the props, needles and supports that keep a building safe while it's altered.

On a period house, we propped the building in sections while the new steels went in. In a Leeds city-centre basement, our team propped the whole basement to carry an 80-tonne crane, using RMD's Alshore and Rapidshore systems. Nine lads, five days.

Propping design and installation for homeowners and main contractors. Save this one, and give us a shout when you need it.
