It’s important to recognise causes of pressure loss on a combination boiler or unvented heating system. The following are ways of identifying reasons for pressure loss:
1. Whilst there is a demand for heating, if the pressure gauge rises to 3 bar in a short period, the boiler will relieve water through a 15mm pipe run externally or internally into a tundish.
2. There could be a leak on any part of the heating circuit, whether at the boiler, radiators, radiator valves etc.
3. If the relief pipe is dripping before the boiler reaches 3 bar, would indicate a faulty pressure relief valve.
4. If there is NO sign of leaks anywhere on the heating circuit but you have pipes run in concrete or under floor, there is a chance, if pipe work isn’t protected, would mean pipe work deterioration/corrosion under concrete.
1&3 would normally be a cause of a faulty expansion vessel, which in most cases, can be rectified by pre-charging the vessel (pump up to 1 bar).
