Shaun always wanted to work at Phillips & Son β€” and thankfully, when the opportunity came up, he grabbed it. Happy accident for him, good news for us. It was clearly destiny!

Ask him what his favourite kind of job is and he'll tell you he enjoys every single one he works on. That's not a rehearsed answer β€” that's just Shaun loving the outdoors life and having a talented team around him.

Desert island tool? A saw. No fuss, no frills β€” just the right tool in the right hands which he couples with the best advice he's been given - and that's to always smile. Two words, but on a long day on site, it goes a long way. 😊

Away from work, you'll find Shaun at the oche. Darts is his thing β€” and if he's half as good at darts as he is a roofer, good luck to his competition!

This flat roof had seen better days. It was leaking and well past its best, so we stripped it right back and started fresh with a full renewal.

Flat roofs get a bad reputation, but a properly installed one will give you many years of trouble-free performance.

The key word there is π’‘π’“π’π’‘π’†π’“π’π’š β€” no shortcuts, no bodge jobs.

If your flat roof is showing signs of damage it's important to get it looked at sooner rather than later to minimise any internal damage.

When one part of a roof goes, it's usually not long before the other follows which was exactly the case for this customer - so we stripped both front and back and renewed them both at the same time.

It's always worth thinking about the bigger picture with a roof. A patch job might buy you a bit of time, but if the underlying materials are tired and weathered, you're often just delaying the inevitable- and paying more for the courtesy of it.

A full strip gives us the chance to see exactly what we're working with, deal with anything underneath that needs attention, and start fresh with everything installed properly.

The result? A roof that looks the part and β€” more importantly β€” does its job.

If your roof is getting on a bit and you're starting to notice the odd damp patch or missing tile, don't leave it until it becomes a bigger problem.

Wayne has been side by side with Dai since before some of our lads were even born, and he's still out there grafting with us every day. To mark the milestone, we had Wayne and Dai's first hammers framed together β€” because after 40 years they've earned their place on the wall.

Not every chimney needs to stay.

Whether it's in use or not, a chimney can sometimes become more of a problem than it's worth over time β€” weathering, cracking, and failed flashings are all common. And once water finds a way in, it usually does some damage before anyone notices.

We were called in to remove a chimney and fit a gas flue β€” and once our work was done, we brought in a qualified gas engineer to carry out the safety check and make sure everything was properly signed off.

Right trades, right people, no corners cut.πŸ‘Œ

Meet Luke πŸ‘·

Luke picked up a summer job in roofing between uni years β€” and decided the roof was more interesting than the lecture hall. He left uni and has never looked back.

On the tools, leadwork and flat roofs are where he's happiest. These are two disciplines that take real skill to get right, and Luke's got both.

Desert island essential? Not a tool ... his shorts! Luke doesn't like working in trousers. Shorts are his non-negotiable. β˜€οΈ

The best advice he's taken on board comes from Dai Phillips himself: "Any issues you have, leave them the other side of the gate. Come to work, enjoy, laugh." Simple, straightforward advice, but it sets the tone for the whole working day.

Away from site, you'll find Luke watching snooker whenever he can. There's nothing wrong with a man who knows how to switch off after a hard day's graft.

And his standout memory? Craig had a go on Liam's bike. It didn't end well - Luke's not still laughing ... honest Craig! πŸ˜„

If you were going to leave uni for a reason, we're glad it was for us and a career in roofing, Luke. πŸ™Œ

🏠 Balcony Flat Roof β€” Stripped & Replaced with EPDM

Flat roofs aren't just for garages and extensions β€” this one was a balcony, and it was well past its best.

We stripped it right back, replaced the deck underneath, and laid a full EPDM rubber membrane. Clean finish, watertight, and built to last. πŸ‘Œ

If you've got a flat roof on a balcony, bay window, porch, or canopy β€” no matter how small β€” it's worth getting it looked at before a minor issue turns into a bigger problem.
