With the bank holiday only a few days away, most logistics and distribution sites are already adjusting schedules to absorb the gap.

A shorter week compresses the same yard workload into less time. When storage is exposed or loading bays are uncovered, that pressure lands harder than usual and leaves less room to manage around it.

The good news is that most container yards already have what they need to fix it. Shield mounts directly to the ISO containers already on site, needs no groundworks, and is typically operational within 48 hours of delivery.

The 1st October deadline is only five weeks away.

From that date, every permitted waste receiving site in England and Wales must log every load received on DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking Service. Paper Waste Transfer Notes are gone from that date, with no grace period for sites that are not yet compliant.

Most sites are working through the software side right now, getting registered and training weighbridge staff. The physical yard tends to come up later.

DEFRA's system gives regulators a live view of what is arriving at your site, in what condition, and how it is being handled. Sites with covered separation bays and dry, organised storage are well placed when that level of visibility comes in.

Most logistics sites calculate the cost of a cover by the unit price.

Replace a temporary cover every three to five years, and over 15 years, you have paid for the same square footage of the roof three times over. Each replacement brings removal costs, downtime while the yard is exposed, and in some cases an insurance excess if a failure caused damage along the way. A lot of facilities managers reach that third replacement before they hit the full number.

The more useful question before the next purchase order is what covering this part of the site will actually cost over 15 years, and what the most efficient route to get there looks like.

James Kemball is a container service provider offering cargo handling, long-term storage, and logistics solutions to their clients. When their customers started asking for undercover storage, they went looking for something that would fit the operation and set them apart.

Harriet Hamer, their Operations Director, had worked with McGregor Structures before. When the requirement came up to cover their existing concrete block bays and meet Environment Agency specifications, she gave us a call.

Opus connected to the Legato blocks already in place, no groundworks were required, and the installation was complete in two days with the site still running throughout. The results were immediate, less manual handling, lower transport costs from drier processed material, and more usable space across the site.

Harriet summed it up:

It is the UK's biggest event for the recycling and waste management sector. This year, it lands just weeks before the Digital Waste Tracking deadline in October, which means the conversations happening will be more operational than usual. Sites are thinking about what needs to be in order before the deadline hits.

The Defence Investment Plan published on 30 June commits £22.7 billion to the defence estate over the next four years.

Nine in ten MOD properties are flagged for improvement. Three in ten, around 14,000, need significant work or a full rebuild. For estates teams, the direction is clear, and the funding is the most significant commitment to defence infrastructure in a generation.

Turning that commitment into completed infrastructure takes time. Procurement cycles, planning, groundworks, the longer programme will deliver, but some requirements on the ground move faster with a different approach.

July is typically when construction sites, aggregate operations, and distribution yards ramp up their summer programmes. The groundworks are done, volumes are up, and any gaps in covered storage or workspace become visible quickly.

Recently, we completed a troop shelter project for a defence training facility.

The project involved the delivery of a Shield troop shelter, with the McGregor Structures team working closely with the client throughout, responding to requirements as they developed and maintaining progress against programme milestones. The result was a facility completed within the agreed timeframe and below the approved budget, meeting the required quality standards throughout.

Mr. Castle, Project Lead, wrote to us on completion:

"The facility is now operational and is providing immediate health, safety, and welfare benefits to our people. The standard of workmanship and finish reflects positively on all parties involved and represents a durable, high-quality asset that will support training activity over the long term."
