THE MAN WHO RE-MOWED AN ENTIRE LAWN BECAUSE ONE STRIPE WAS THREE DEGREES OFF

He'd finished. The lawn was done. By any normal standard it looked superb.

Then he went upstairs and looked out of the back bedroom window, the way he always does, and he spotted it. One stripe.

Very slightly off the line of the others. Three degrees, maybe four. Invisible to every other person who has ever lived.

Out he went again. Obviously. He wasn't going to be able to sleep knowing it was out there.

His family have learned not to say anything. The neighbours have learned not to ask. The lawn, in fairness, looks absolutely immaculate.

We're not saying this is a problem. We're saying we've found our people.

Tag the stripe obsessive in your life. They're probably at the window as we speak.

Autumn gives new grass the best chance to establish before winter, with warm soil, cooler air and fewer w**ds competing for space.

If you're thinking about scarifying, overseeding or top-dressing, autumn is the time to plan.

Summer is the hardest season your lawn will face all year.

Heat, footfall, drought and disease all pile on at once, and the things that help in spring can actually hurt in summer. Raising your mowing height, easing off the feed and watering smartly all make a real difference. We have pulled together our essential summer lawn care tips for UK gardens.

Full guide is in the comments, including all our essential tips for keeping a UK lawn healthy through summer.

That is not a flower. That is a w**d making itself at home.

Summer is when lawn w**ds show themselves, and knowing what you are looking at is half the battle. Dandelions, clover, creeping buttercup, plantain and speedwell all need slightly different handling.

What is the one w**d you cannot get rid of? Name and shame below.

Full guide in the comments.

You'll sometimes see two lawns on the same street, same weather, same soil, and by August one looks fine and the other's gone straw coloured and thin. It usually comes down to what happened over the months before, not luck.

Summer doesn't really cause lawn problems so much as show them up. The heat, the dry spells, more use and more going on in the soil all land at once, and anything that was quietly wrong in spring gets found out. Compacted soil that can't hold water so the rain just runs off. A lawn that ran out of feed weeks ago and has nothing left in the tank. Grass cut too short with no leaf left to cope. Red thread turning up on the humid days. Chafer grubs and leatherjackets working away at the roots underneath.

The good news is a lawn that copes with summer is mostly built rather than born. Decent root depth, sensible feeding and not cutting too short do most of the work, and autumn is the time to get that groundwork in.

We've put the full read in the comments on why lawns struggle through summer and how to build one that holds up.

Lawn gone yellow? Before you buy anything to "fix" it, it's worth working out what's actually causing it, because the wrong treatment tends to waste money and sometimes makes things worse.

In a dry summer it's usually just drought dormancy. The whole lawn fades fairly evenly, the base still feels firm and dry rather than soft, and it greens back up once we get some proper rain. It looks dead but it isn't. The grass is just shutting down to save itself.

The problem is that a few other things look similar but need a completely different approach. If it's patchy rather than all over, have a closer look. Pinkish threads on the blades point to red thread. A brown patch with a darker green ring round it is nearly always the dog. Yellow streaks that line up with the way you mow are usually scorch or the mower set too low.

So it's worth a proper look before you reach for a feed or a fungicide. Feed won't touch scorch, and fungicide does nothing for a dormant lawn.

We've put a full rundown of the causes and how to tell them apart in the comments.

Lawn gone yellow or pale in the heat? It is trying to tell you something.

A yellowing summer lawn usually comes down to drought stress, a lawn short on nitrogen, dog urine or disease, and the fix depends entirely on which one it is. Watering harder is rarely the answer. We have broken down the six most common causes and how to put each one right.
