Copied but true and reality is that £25 is cheap
Why is £25/hour considered "expensive" for a self-employed trade, but £12.71/hour is standard minimum wage for an employee?
People often compare these two numbers, but they aren't the same thing.
When an employee earns £12.71/hr, that’s their pay before tax. On top of that, their employer covers:
Paid holiday (5.6 weeks a year)
Paid sick leave
Pension contributions
Employer’s National Insurance
All tools, uniforms, and equipment
When a self-employed sole trader charges £25/hour, that IS NOT their wage. That is business revenue.
Out of that £25, they have to pay for:
Overheads: Van lease, fuel, public liability insurance, tool insurance, accountant fees, advertising, business banking.
Equipment: Buying and maintaining tools, workwear, materials.
Time off: Zero pay for holidays, sick days, or slow periods.
Unpaid hours: Hours spent quoting, travelling, invoicing, and doing admin (which nobody pays for).
Taxes: Income Tax and National Insurance.
After covering basic business costs and unpaid admin time, that £25/hour charge often leaves the owner taking home less than minimum wage for their actual labor.
Next time you get a quote from a small local business, remember: you aren't paying for an inflated wage. You are paying for an insured, equipped, and mobile business to show up and get the job done.

Emergency wasp treatment this morning for 1 of the care homes I take care of. Wasps were getting in to the bedroom, taped up internal air vent, around the window frame and switched off which lights we could do safely, then treated the nest externally. My recording skills need work...

Morning folks, we didn't make it to the final and I'm sure a lot of you will have some sore heads..... BUT
In other news 2 moles caught on first check of traps, 1st mole catcher did a call out for £45 didn't set any traps, 2nd mole catcher (hobby & neighbour) been chasing them for weeks.
Reset traps as still a bit of fresh activity, but very happy customer so far!
