called me today to report that a tree we were working on had:
~ Basal trunk decay and included bark
Not only that, there was all sorts to identify when I arrived🧐🌳
~ Girdling root formation: These girdling roots compress vascular tissues, restricting water and nutrient transport, which weakens the tree further at the collar.
~ Compartmentalization (CODIT response): The tree is attempting to compartmentalize decay—darkened, cracked bark ridges and callus tissue are evidence of woundwood formation. However, the decay column is clearly advancing inside the basal flare.
~ Predisposition to wind-throw or sudden trunk failure: In fact recent high winds had probably caused this split to occur.
Conclusion: Remove dangerous street tree 🪓
