Richard Ruddick Architecture

Richard Ruddick Architecture Welcome to Richard Ruddick Architects. A leading RIBA Chartered architectural practice based in Newcastle.

Richard Ruddick Architecture has one clear aim; to produce inspired architecture. No matter the size of the project, we take a holistic approach to the design process and consider everything from your lifestyle, to the architecture, interior design, landscaping and energy efficiency of the finished project. Through constant dialogue and design development, we ensure that the architecture we create

is individually tailored to meet your requirements and to fit and enhance your lifestyle. All designs are developed using a mixture of traditional and modern techniques and as Autodesk Revit 2015 Architecture Certified Professionals, we create our final proposals using BIM (Building Information Modelling). Compared to traditional methods, this technique provides an intelligent 3D model which helps to detect issues early and mitigate costly delays later in the project, as well as allowing us to provide you with 3D images of the proposal to help communicate the design. Our services are provided throughout the project, from conception to completion. We aim to make the design and building process clear, enjoyable, and stress free from the start, and believe that through good communication with all parties involved, we are able to ensure we achieve a high quality finished project. Carrying out work throughout the UK, we have extensive experience working on a range of projects, from bespoke residential commissions with build costs of £100,000+ to large scale educational facilities in excess of £30 million. ON SITE | PROGRESS UPDATE

Construction is now well underway on this bespoke garden room with

The structure is taking shape quickly, with the primary frame, floor build-up and wall construction now in place. You can already start to see how the spaces will feel, particularly the main opening which frames a fantastic uninterrupted view out to the surrounding countryside.

The sauna and gym have been carefully positioned to take full advantage of this outlook, creating a space that’s not just functional, but genuinely restorative, with long views through the trees and out across the landscape.

The site is heavily constrained by protected trees, all of which have been retained and carefully worked around, allowing the building to sit comfortably within the woodland setting.

The design includes:

Gym and sauna suite
Sedum roof to soften the building into its surroundings
Elevated structure to minimise impact on roots and create a floating appearance
Large-format openings to frame views and bring in natural light
It’s always rewarding to see these projects move from paper to reality — and this one is starting to capture exactly what it was designed to do.

Designed and project managed by our team.

Design Progress — Indoor Padel

We’re continuing to develop the design for a new indoor padel venue, refining how the building works as a complete experience — not just for playing, but for staying and socialising.

These latest work-in-progress visuals show how the scheme is evolving as we move through design development.

Key areas currently being progressed:

* Arrival and reception space, integrated with the bar
* Social seating and spectator areas overlooking the courts
* Lounge spaces to support longer dwell time within the venue
* Material and lighting strategy to bring warmth into the industrial shell

The focus at this stage is on how these spaces connect — creating a natural flow from arrival, to play, to post-game.

A really positive step forward, with the design starting to come together as a cohesive whole.
More to follow as we continue to refine.

Design Detail → The Arrival

While the garden elevation forms the social heart of the house, this side of the building focuses on arrival.

The entrance sequence is defined by a strong cantilevered volume. The darker upper form appears to float above the lighter brick base, helping to break down the overall scale of the house.

Large areas of glazing provide glimpses into the internal spaces, giving the approach a sense of depth and connection to the life of the house beyond.

Interestingly, this is technically the “rear” of the site — but it becomes the primary entrance, allowing the living spaces to open fully onto the garden and outdoor entertaining areas.

A simple idea, but one that helps organise the house around how it will actually be lived in.

If you’re planning your own project, we’d love to hear about it.

Design Detail → Outdoor Living

Here’s a closer look at one of the key ideas shaping the design — the outdoor living spaces.

The house has been organised so that the main living areas open directly onto a large, covered terrace and outdoor kitchen, creating a natural extension of the interior spaces.

Rather than treating the garden as separate from the house, the architecture frames it, with deep overhangs providing shelter, large sliding glazing connecting the kitchen and dining areas, and a dedicated outdoor cooking and entertaining space designed to be used year-round.

It’s these moments between inside and outside that often become the most enjoyable parts of a home.

More to come as the design continues to evolve.

If you’re planning a bespoke home, we’d love to hear about it.

Design Progress → Visualised

The design for this bespoke contemporary home in the heart of Jesmond is now starting to take shape.

Early sketch studies explored how the house could respond to the site and prioritise outdoor living. As the design has developed, those ideas are now being translated into a clear architectural form, with generous glazing, strong horizontal planes, and a series of covered outdoor spaces that extend the living areas into the landscape.

The outdoor kitchen and terrace become a central part of the home, creating spaces that work just as well for everyday family life as they do for entertaining.

A fantastic project to be working on, and a great example of how early design thinking evolves into a fully resolved architectural proposal.

Still some more work to be done but nearly there!

If you’re planning your own project, we’d love to hear from you.

PROJECT UPDATE

A few weeks ago we shared a new project set within a beautiful landscape on the edge of Newcastle, complete with mature trees, natural watercourses, and even its own private mini-lake.

Since then, we’ve been progressing the design and developing the architecture, and we’re excited to now share some of the first visuals of the proposal.

The scheme takes cues from traditional forms, expressed as a series of simple gabled volumes, while introducing a contemporary architectural language with large framed openings and generous double-height spaces. Carefully positioned glazing captures long views across the landscape while maintaining a highly efficient building envelope.
Inside, vaulted spaces and large picture windows create a strong connection between the interior and the surrounding countryside, allowing light and views to shape the experience of the home.

Performance remains central to the design, with high-performance building fabric, thoughtful orientation, and integrated renewables supporting long-term comfort, efficiency, sustainability, and biodiversity net gain.
We’re looking forward to sharing more as the project develops.

If you’re thinking about your own project, let’s talk.

Padel is booming in the UK — but great venues are about more than just courts.

At Richard Ruddick Architects, we’re currently developing the design for a new indoor padel facility, bringing together sport, hospitality and social space into a single venue.

Our role is the architectural design of the entire facility, including the courts, spectator areas and bar/reception space that acts as the social heart of the building.

These early work-in-progress visualisations show how the venue is beginning to take shape.
The aim is to create a space where people come not only to play, but to stay, watch and socialise:

• Indoor padel courts within a contemporary industrial sports hall
• Integrated bar and reception overlooking the courts
• Spectator seating and viewing areas
• Warm lighting and materials to create atmosphere during evening play.

Padel venues work best when they feel like a destination, not just a sports facility, and that experience starts with good architecture.
Looking forward to sharing more as the project progresses.
