Repair or Replace? Episode 4: Chimney Stack Damage 🧱

Cracked mortar, loose bricks or failing leadwork do not always mean that the entire chimney needs rebuilding inside and out.

Sometimes a targeted repair is enough. However, as you might unfortunately expect, widespread movement, water damage or deterioration may mean rebuilding the stack is the safer long-term option.

Which can get pretty invasive, so the best thing is to make sure you get the damage looked at by someone who knows what they’re looking for and at.

Birds! And how we stop them nesting where they shouldn’t 🐦‍⬛

Birds are part of the landscape, but your roof is not always the best place for them to settle in for your sake or for their own.

Nesting around rooflines, under tiles, near chimneys or close to gutters can lead to blocked drainage, mess, loose materials and repeat maintenance issues. But it can also be dangerous for the feathered friends, especially around chimneys.

The aim is not to cause harm. It is to protect the roof properly, using the right guards and deterrents in the right places. And in the meantime, a polite bird box against a tree makes for a safer nesting experience for domestic birds afterwards.

Dare we mention Autumn already? Leaves, gutters and built up roof trouble 🍂

It might feel early, but the leaves don’t tend to wait around until you’re ready before they start making a home for themselves in your gutter.

When gutters, valleys and flat roof outlets start filling up, rainwater has fewer places to go. That can mean overflowing gutters, damp patches, blocked downpipes and extra pressure on roof details.

It is not the most glamorous bit of roof maintenance, but it is definitely one of the most useful.

Bubbling felt on a flat roof does not always mean the whole roof needs replacing straight away. Sometimes, it can simply be a local issue caused by trapped moisture, movement or age in one section of the roof.

But if the felt is lifting, cracking, splitting, holding water or leaking in more than one place, a small repair may only buy you a bit of time before the bigger picture kicks in.

The important thing is knowing whether you’re looking at a sensible local fix or the start of a bigger problem. Catch the problem early, and it’s probably good news between a localised repair job and a replacement.

More light is great! Leaks around it are less great, though ☀️

Rooflights can make a huge difference to a room, bringing in natural light and making the space feel brighter, bigger and more useful. Save some money on the lighting bills and enjoy these shining summers, a bit of a win-win if you ask us.

The only ‘but’ with these, though, is that they need to be installed correctly.

The rooflight itself is only one part of the job. The flashing, waterproofing, positioning and surrounding roof detail all matter if you want all the fun of the natural light without the leaks.
