Pond Life -
Common Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) and
Palmate Newt (Lissotriton helvictus)
Both found at a recent pond job.
The Common Smooth Newt has a life span of around six years and can secrete poison from its skin protecting it from predators.
The Palmate Newt can live for up to ten years and is generally smaller than the smooth newt.
Both species are generalist carnivores with a broad diet including invertebrates, crustaceans and the eggs and hatchlings of frogs and fish.
