I was asked to carry out an EICR on the above by a customer as the property was due its 10 year check (advised) unfortunately during the test it was found that the circuit breakers, main switch and RCD’s where full of grit, dirt and debris that was getting into the consumer units from the ceiling above through openings in the top surface of the units. The circuit breakers and one of the RCD’s took multiple attempts to energise due to being full of the dirt, it was my advice to the customer that the boards need replacing due to the dirt and not being able to guarantee that they would function correctly to keep the installation and herself/family safe going forward. It was decided that new RCBO filled units were to be fitted with surge protection to bring the installation up to the current version of the electrical regulations.
