- Specialist skills: Many older buildings were constructed with materials and techniques that are no longer widely used, meaning that specialist knowledge is required from the beginning.

- Balancing old vs new: It can be challenging to integrate modern requirements while preserving character, and there are many differing opinions on aesthetic alterations.

- Unique buildings: Unlike many modern buildings, older properties often don’t have standardised dimensions, drawings or construction methods. This means every single building requires individualised attention.
