šØ Heating Oil Alert šØ
Iāve been made aware by several people that heating oil theft is on the rise. Sadly, one property in Hickling was targeted last night.
Itās a timely reminder to take a few precautions where possible. Here are some ideas to help reduce the risk:
š Tank Location
If your tank is positioned at the front of your property, consider whether it could be relocated to the side or rear where itās less visible and harder to access.
š” Lighting & Visibility
Install motion-activated floodlights around your tank. Thieves prefer darkness and easy accessālight alone can be a strong deterrent.
šØ Alarm Systems
While there are sonic alarms that alert you to sudden oil loss, these often trigger once the theft has already started. A better option is a motion-triggered alarm system that activates when someone approaches the tank.
š¹ CCTV / Doorbells
Devices like the Ring Video Doorbell (or similar systems) can be set up with motion zones to monitor your driveway and tank area. Even visible cameras can put people off.
š Tank Locks ā Think Twice
Padlocks may seem like a good idea, but they can sometimes make things worse. There have been cases where thieves have drilled directly into tanks when they couldnāt access themācausing significant damage and loss. Security needs to be about deterrence, not just restriction.
š¢ļø Oil Level Monitoring
Consider installing a remote oil level monitor that alerts you to unusual drops in levels. It wonāt stop theft, but it can help you react quickly.
š Stay Alert During Deliveries
There are reports of delivery drivers being followed, with thieves noting which properties have recently received oil. If you notice unfamiliar vehicles lingering nearby during or after a delivery, take note and report anything suspicious.
š Community Awareness
Keep an eye out for neighbours, especially those who may be away or vulnerable. A quick check-in or shared awareness can go a long way.
