Fire risk assessments are a legal requirement for all businesses to undertake in their premises.

As a minimum, a fire risk assessment should be updated annually or each time a significant change to the premises or organisation is made and regularly reviewed as part of ongoing fire safety management.

When we carry out a risk assessment, we need to follow a COSHH Principle, which sees us removing the hazard before controlling it.

In the case of a Legionella risk assessment, this could be removing the shower head from a shower that doesn't get used before flushing it.

Construction sites can change dramatically from one week to the next and fire safety arrangements need to keep pace.

As work progresses, new hazards can appear, access routes can change and different materials and activities can introduce additional risks.

That’s why regular fire safety checks are so important during a construction project, including reviewing:
🔥 Escape routes and fire points
🔥 Storage of flammable materials
🔥 Waste and housekeeping
🔥 Hot works procedures
🔥 Smoking areas

A fire risk assessment shouldn’t simply be completed and filed away. It should reflect what is actually happening on site.

Acorn Safety Services can support construction businesses with practical fire safety advice and fire risk assessments throughout the lifecycle of a project.

Could someone in your organisation benefit from legionella awareness training?

If you’re responsible for managing water safety within your organisation, having the right knowledge and understanding is essential.

Our legionella awareness training is designed to give you and your team the confidence to identify, understand and help control the risks associated with Legionella.

The training covers:
💧 What Legionella bacteria are, where they can grow and how people can be exposed
💧The health risks associated with Legionnaires’ disease
💧 Your legal reponsibilities, including ACOP L8 and HSG274
💧 How to identify water systems and areas that may present a risk
💧 Practical control measures, including temperature control, flushing, cleaning and disinfection
💧 Monitoring, record keeping and written schemes of control
💧 The responsibilities of Duty Holders and Responsible Persons
💧 What to do if a suspected Legionella risk or non-conformity is identified

The course is suitable for duty holders and responsible persons, facilities and estates teams, landlords and building owners, health and safety professionals, maintenance teams and anyone involved in managing water systems.

Health and safety site inspections can be called a number of things depending on the site.

For example:
🔹 Site inspection
🔹 Health and safety inspection
🔹 Health and safety walk around
🔹 Hazard spotting

But why do we need them? And what do they cover?

Are your emergency showers and eyewash stations included in your flushing regime?

They’re there for emergencies, but because they’re rarely used, they can also be easily forgotten during routine water hygiene checks.

Need support with water hygiene, legionella risk management or reviewing your flushing regime? Get in touch with our team today on 01604 344504 or [email protected]
