Saturday 15th August should have been in your diaries for months, 'cos it's Cider Salon (Bristol), the nation's original Salon event, now in it's 9th year.

Quality control in action, and also a lunch break in the life of a cider-maker ...

Having just finished bottling a small batch of private-label cider for a client, we felt a need to double- and triple-check the quality of the cider we've just bottled, and no better way to do that take a bottle for oneself, that sit in the dappled shade for half an hour, admire the simple peace, tranquility and beauty of the rural Cotswolds, sip and enjoy said cider (fresh, crisp, dry, refreshing, fault-free, the client will enjoy it, so it definitely passes the tests), slowly munch on our homemade coleslaw (kohlrahbi, cabbage, carrots, a few pine nuts) and reflect on how hundreds and thousands of choices made over 64+ years have led to this serene, happy (if somewhat solitary) moment ...
.. and also reflect on how much more pleasing it is to be a supporter of this current England football team and its manager than those from Argentina, notwithstanding the acute disappointment of last Wednesday's result. Viva España.

CONGRATULATIONS! Like Arsenal , Sheavyn FC are through to the final, thereby triggering a well-deserved extention to our sponsorship arrangement - a few more £££ and a lot more cider being despatched to Manchester, in time for the final. This is more proof that the motivational effect of a good bottle of proper cider can work in all sorts of ways. Come On You Tangerines!!

An ancient perry pear tree, a remnant of an old and neglected orchard, breaking into blossom, as it has done for many, many years ... but in the absence of pollination partners it rarely produces any fruit. To fix that, we recently planted several new perry trees next to it (safely enclosed in guards to protect them from marauding deer), in the hope and expectation of successful cross-pollination producing a crop.

This was part of a project organised and orchestrated by the National Trust at Ebworth, in the Cotwolds , where we played an advisory role, on behalf of the Gloucestershire Orchard Trust
