The cylinder and plant room matter just as much as the outdoor unit.

For this Winsford gas boiler replacement, the system included a 210-litre unvented cylinder, Vaillant controls and the pipework needed to run heating, hot water and cooling through underfloor heating.

Cooling through underfloor heating needs more thought than just switching a setting on. The controls, floor loops and condensation protection all need to be considered properly.

That is why the design stage is so important. It is not just about choosing a heat pump size and finding somewhere to put it outside.

One thing people are starting to ask more often is:

"Can a heat pump help with summer cooling too?"

Fair question, especially during another very hot week this summer.

On this Winsford job, the Vaillant aroTHERM plus cooling function was used with underfloor heating. The heat pump runs in reverse and circulates chilled water through the floor loops, which helps bring the building temperature down gently.

It is not the same as fitting air conditioning, and it has to be designed and controlled properly. But when the house was 27 degrees before cooling was activated, it settled at around 22 degrees indoors while it was about 35 degrees outside.

A proper survey and design still comes first, but cooling is now a real conversation than can be had for the right home when installing an air source heat pump.

A gas boiler replacement completed in Winsford, Cheshire.

This one is a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus with a 210-litre unvented cylinder and underfloor heating throughout.

The interesting bit on this job is that the heat pump is not just doing heating and hot water. It is also set up for cooling.

On a hot week, the system can run in reverse and send chilled water around the underfloor heating, helping cool the fabric of the building rather than blowing cold air around the room.

If you are looking at replacing an old boiler with a heat pump, this is the kind of thing worth talking through at survey stage.

Inside this Tattenhall home, the new system includes a 150-litre unvented cylinder, the Vaillant controls and the pipework needed to run the heating and hot water properly.

Getting this side of the job designed and installed neatly matters just as much as where the unit sits outside.

This 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus is cooling compatible as well as providing heating and hot water.

Cooling isn't something to add as an afterthought. The full system, controls and emitters need to be designed with it in mind.

On this Tattenhall installation, that was part of the plan from the start, giving the homeowner another option for warmer summer days.

Worth discussing at survey stage if cooling is important to you.

Another oil boiler replacement completed in Tattenhall, Chester.

The old boiler has been replaced with a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus heat pump and a 150-litre unvented hot-water cylinder.

This is Vaillant's new anthracite finish. It sits neatly against the brickwork and gives the outdoor unit a much cleaner look.

Because this was an eligible off-gas-grid home replacing oil heating, the installation was able to benefit from the £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available from 21 July 2026.

The government heat pump grant goes up to £9,000 from 21 July, for homes off the gas grid on oil or LPG. It was £7,500.

Rebuilding an old underfloor heating manifold with a Swedish Esbe valve and a Danish Grundfos pump! No cheap Chinese sh*te

After filming this I’ve realised most wouldn’t tell the difference between the before and after 😅

The results are what matters and when you use the right products in the correct way you know the difference
