Castlegate restoration works were recently completed on this Grade II listed property.

The existing cement render was carefully removed due to ongoing water ingress issues, along with the hard cement pointing on the chimney brickwork, which was trapping moisture within the structure.

All masonry was then repointed using traditional hot lime mortar, mixed on site using lime, Bath stone dust, crushed brick, and horsehair to create a breathable mortar more suited to the building’s original construction.

The wall was then finished with hot-applied limewash to help protect the masonry while keeping the building breathable.

One of the biggest challenges on this project was working directly above a fragile asbestos roof, which meant access had to be carefully planned throughout.

Thankfully, ASK Scaffold Ltd provided an excellent scaffold setup, which made access safe and straightforward for the team throughout the works.

Some positive progress at The Old Lodge screen wall!

Following many months of discussions with Historic England, extensive mortar and stone trials, and archaeological investigations by LS Archaeology, we are now moving towards applying for Scheduled Monument Consent for the repair and rebuilding works.

The first phase will involve scaffold installation beneath the arch, along with carefully monitored trial sections to ensure the proposed conservation methods satisfy all parties involved, including Historic England, Nigel Copsey and ourselves at Build & Restore.

These early stages are essential to making sure the repairs are carried out sympathetically, safely and to the highest conservation standards possible.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while access restrictions and safety measures are put in place during these works

We’re currently looking for locally sourced limestone for repairs to the Grade II* listed screen wall at The Old Lodge, Malton.

The wall is built from the same stone seen throughout Malton and the nearby villages, so we’re keen to source as much matching local limestone as possible to keep the repairs sympathetic to the original historic fabric.

We’ve already managed to source a large amount locally from Amotherby, with some fantastic reclaimed stone that, as you can see, is a great match for the original walling.

If anyone locally has:

* reclaimed limestone walling stone
* old field stone
* limestone
* or knows of any local sources

please drop us a message.

Every usable piece helps preserve the character and authenticity of this important historic structure.

Working over at Castle D**e, Malton on this lovely Grade II listed brick property, only a stone’s throw away from The Old Lodge where we’ve recently completed major conservation works.

Tucked within one of Malton’s oldest areas, the building has seen centuries of repairs and alterations, with modern cement unfortunately causing damage to the original soft brickwork.

We’re carefully removing cement mortar from the chimneys and repointing in traditional hotlime mortar, along with new lime flaunch work to the stacks.

Modern render is also being removed from an external wall before being repointed in hotlime mortar and finished in breathable limewash, as it originally would have been.

Traditional materials and sympathetic repairs, allowing the building to breathe and perform as intended once again.

Does anyone local fancy being part of the screen wall at The Old Lodge Malton and building us a motorised sieve?

It’ll allow us to use local aggregate, keep the work true to the area, and keep things moving on a busy roadside job.
Hand sieving would take forever… and buying it in already graded is serious money.

Good little project for someone handy.

Drop me a message 👍

The Old Lodge, Malton

Best bit of the job — taking the scaffold down to reveal the fruits of our labour.

Left parapet rebuilt.
All cement pointing stripped out and replaced with hot-lime ashlar pointing to match the original.

Leaning gable above the date stone taken down and rebuilt back plumb with stones replaced.

Windows now over to for full restoration, then finished by Decorators.

Most of the work’s been above the parapets — unseen but critical.
Roof now watertight thanks to Unique Roofing Limited.
Chimneys solid.

A big thank you to Nigel Copsey for being there for invaluable guidance.

More to follow once the front elevation comes down.

Nearly there on the screen wall — measuring up the stone quantities.

Believed to date back to the early 17th century, forming part of the historic setting of the Old Lodge in Malton.

It’s been a long time coming. A big step forward.
