The next few days are set to be extremely hot across Norwich and the Broads, and we know many people will be heading to the rivers to cool off and enjoy the sunshine.
Unfortunately, warm weather often brings an increase in water-related incidents. We want everyone to enjoy the Broads safely and return home with nothing more than good memories.
As Rangers, we'll be out across the network throughout the warm weather period, looking out for you and helping to keep everyone safe. We'd also like to share a few important reminders:
🍻 We know that for many people enjoying a drink in the sunshine is all part of a great day out, but please know your limits. Skippering a boat under the influence isn't just dangerous, it may be an offence. Take extra care when getting on and off boats, and remember that alcohol can affect your judgement around the water.
🦺 Please wear a life jacket whenever you're on a boat or out paddling. This applies to everyone on board, including children and pets. They may not be the most fashionable bit of kit, but they could save your life.
⚠️ We often see people jumping from boats onto moorings, aiming for an Indiana Jones style escape. While it might seem harmless, it's a common cause of accidents. Distances can be deceptive, and a misjudged jump can quickly end with you in the water.
🏊 The Broads can look inviting on a hot day, but open water swimming outside organised events carries risks. There may be moving vessels, strong currents and hidden underwater hazards, so make sure you understand the dangers and plan carefully. It's worth remembering that after a few drinks you won't be a great swimmer too.
🚶 Jumping from bridges and other structures into the water can have serious consequences, we've unfortunately seen it too many times before. Hidden hazards, shallow water and underwater obstructions can cause life-changing injuries, so please think twice before taking the plunge.
🔥 With temperatures expected to be very high, please use BBQs responsibly. Take care not to start grass or reed fires, and remember that BBQs should never be used aboard a boat.
🌊 Most importantly, if you do find yourself in the water unexpectedly, try to stay calm and remember to Float To Live. Floating on your back helps you cope with the effects of cold water shock and can save your life.
Many visitors and regular users of the Broads are already familiar with these messages, but a simple reminder can make all the difference.
We hope everyone enjoys the sunshine and has a safe few days on the water.
