Vertical Farm, Beijing

Designed by Rotterdam-based Van Bergen Kolpa Architecten, this stunning 3,500-square-metre greenhouse redefines urban agriculture at the entrance of the CAAS campus in central Beijing. Offering stacked horticulture on a compact footprint, it serves as a new icon for professional cultivation while engaging a broad audience with the central role of food in urban life.

The innovative bay windows provide clear views throughout the day, while at night, the building shines brightly as a beacon, illuminated by various LED lights. Water used for irrigation is recycled, and the farm employs passive temperature control through evaporative cooling and sunlight, showcasing a perfect blend of design and sustainability.

Embracing sustainability for the urban farm project! We're implementing innovative strategies to create a greener future.

🔋 Photovoltaic Solar Panels: Harnessing the sun's energy to power our operations sustainably.
🌬️ Cross Ventilation: Enhancing air circulation for a healthier growing environment.
đź’§ Rainwater Filtration System: Collecting and filtering rainwater to nourish our crops efficiently.

Together, these initiatives not only reduce our carbon footprint but also promote biodiversity and resilience in urban ecosystems.

Tested out different forms on the site model to explore how each would interact with the space and surroundings! 🏙️ This hands-on approach allowed me to visualize how various structures could function together, from maximizing natural light to ensuring smooth flow between zones. Each form brings its own strengths, helping refine the layout for a balanced, cohesive design that works with the site’s unique features.

Design Development — Space Planning

Through testing and zoning, we’re transforming this site into a self-sustaining community hub! Each space serves a unique purpose: greenhouses for growing fresh fruits and veggies, a community café that uses produce straight from the site, housing for workers, and workshop spaces for hands-on learning. Every zone is designed to work in harmony, supporting a vision of sustainable living and community connection.

Presenting the site model for our Nottingham project — a hands-on tool that brings the design to life! This model is more than just a visual; it’s a functional piece that allows us to test for natural lighting and shadows, helping us understand how sunlight interacts with the site throughout the day. By studying these effects, we can fine-tune the design to enhance comfort, energy efficiency, and aesthetic impact.

Every angle reveals a new story about how the space will transform under different light conditions. Stay tuned for more insights as we bring this vision to reality!

A crucial element in architecture that gives us a bird's-eye view of how a project will come to life within its surroundings. Situated in the heart of Nottingham, this plan helps us understand the site’s layout, boundaries, and its relationship with the surrounding environment.

As a key part of site analysis, the site plan provides invaluable insights into access points, circulation, landscape features, and zoning, guiding every decision in the design process. It’s not just about plotting a space; it’s about shaping a cohesive vision that respects both function and aesthetics within the context of Nottingham’s vibrant cityscape.

Building a Greener Tomorrow 🌱

At the heart of this community's mission is the power of narrative — storytelling that connects us to the journey of going green and embracing healthier living. Through their passion for sustainable farming and education, they’re weaving a narrative that shows how small choices — like diet changes and growing your own produce — can make a big impact. From hands-on workshops to creating a welcoming space where people come together, they’re turning a simple farm into a thriving hub for change. Let’s be part of this story, rethinking how we connect with our food, our health, and our planet!
