Sometimes I get asked to fit new cameras to an old system, or move old cameras to a different location, or (worst of all!), re-use old cameras from a different site on a new job.
Sometimes it makes sense. If the existing system is fairly new, then new cameras can often be added easily. But mostly, it's a bad idea, here's why!
1. Many old systems have coax cables carrying the video.This means any new cameras have to be analog, and new coax cables AND power supplies/cables have to be run. Analog signals can be vulnerable to "noise" from various sources, and a lot more things can go wrong with analog.
Replacing the whole system with an IP system is more future proof, more long-lasting, and provides more options such as digital alarm controls or camera-side motion detection. It's also quicker and easier to fit, which might save you more money than keeping a few ancient cameras!
2. A fault with an existing system can be very difficult to track down. If I fit a new camera and it doesn't work, is the camera broken? Is the existing cable that I used broken? Is the recorder not set up right?
I know the kit I use. If something doesn't work right, it is quick and easy to fine out why, saving time and effort with any troubleshooting.
3. If, after I leave, something goes wrong, it can be difficult to know if it was caused by the new kit, or by something in the existing kit, and. If something goes wrong with one of your old cameras, just that one support call could cost you more than you saved by reusing a few cameras!
I guarantee all my work for at least 12 months, and all my kit has a 3 year warranty. If you fit all new kit, you can rest assured that I am responsible for keeping it working long in to the future!
I like to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as the next man, but sometimes it can just cause more problems than it solves!
