Ash dieback's ripping through the Sherwood Forest fringe. Watch for diamond-shaped lesions on the bark. Leaves go black and wilt from the tips down. Crowns die back from the top.

Once the base turns brittle these trees drop limbs. No warning. Don't lean a ladder against one. Don't let the kids play underneath either.

Big chunks of Wollaton and Sherwood sit inside conservation areas too. Do unauthorised work and you're looking at a fine up to £20,000. Doesn't matter if the tree's yours. How do you tell if an arborist actually knows their stuff? Ask straight out about training and insurance. Then listen.

A properly trained climber will mention NPTC or City & Guilds tickets. Current chainsaw ticket. Aerial rescue qual. Public liability cover they can put on paper in front of you.

Round Nottingham there's the extra headache of TPOs and conservation areas. Wollaton. The Park. A decent crew rings the council before any saw comes out.

Root rot usually shows up as bracket fungi at the base. Thinning canopy too. Dead wood up top is another giveaway.

Sandstone bedrock round here means shallow root plates on mature limes and oaks. Failures aren't rare. October and November are the worst for it.

Can you fell a large tree safely if it's leaning towards the house or near overhead cables? Yes. Rarely comes down in one piece though. On tight plots around West Bridgford and Mapperley Park we section-fell from the top. Rope each limb down so nothing swings into brickwork or wires. Cables involved? We'll liaise with the DNO before a saw comes out. Not worth the risk. Shallow root plates over the sandstone can make a lean deceptive too. Unsure about a tree? Yes, we can still look at your hedge during nesting season. If we spot active nests though, trimming waits until the birds have fledged. Disturbing them between March and August is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Most Nottingham gardens this time of year? Blackbirds or dunnocks tucked deep in privet and beech. We check thoroughly before any blades come out.

"Will crown reduction hurt my tree?" Done right, no. It actually helps. Look at the mature limes and beeches round The Park and Mapperley Park. We cut the outer canopy back to proper growth points, then thin selectively so wind passes through. Big deal round here. Shallow root plates sat over sandstone bedrock cop a battering when the October gales roll in. We won't top a tree. We won't strip more than it can take. Once a tree's down, the stump's usually where the trouble starts. Catches mower blades. Sends up suckers. Rots slow and pulls in honey fungus. Grinding it out is the cleanest fix. We take it 6 to 12 inches below ground so you can turf over the top, plant into it, or pave straight across. Round Mapperley Park and The Park you've got sandstone bedrock underneath, so root plates sit shallow. Makes for a tidier clearance, that.
