2026 so far. I’m not quite sure how it’s almost halfway through March already, or how it’s three months since I last posted here! I’m not complaining though, it’s been nice to have a break, to step away for a while.

I’ve had a lovely slow start to the year, which was much needed after such a busy 2025! New works in the making, walks in nature, a trip to London, looking out at a different sea and looking at some beautiful and inspiring art.

I’m hoping to spend the Spring working on some new enamel pieces, let’s see where the year takes us.

Some new pages from my watercolour sketchbook. It’s always a little tentative at first, but after a few pages I’ll get into it and work out what I’m trying to achieve. New colours from different inspiration sources this time, more urban than usual! We’ll have to wait and see if any of these end up in the enamel or not, I’ll have fun experimenting and working it out though!

I love adding gold into my work, but with the prices continually rising I have to be mindful of how much I use. Using fine gold wire as an inlay in the enamel and gold foil fused to the surface of the silver frames using the keum boo technique, and then fixing them together with an 18ct gold rivet, adds just enough sparkle and that beautiful buttery gold colour that can totally transform a piece.

This brooch is a perfect example. In slides three and four you can see the original photographs that inspired the enamel design. Much darker than my usual designs, this night scene at the beach really captured my attention, especially the overexposed lights from the ships and wind turbines in the bay.

My enamel designs and my watercolour paintings are about capturing the atmosphere of the coast and also about balance. If the composition is balanced then I think it looks more calming and restful to the human brain, which in turn will hopefully make the viewer and wearer feel calm!
