Everyone’s quick to blame the trades when cowboy builders strike… but nobody mentions the people demanding the cheapest quote, an immediate start and the job finished yesterday 👀

Who’s really feeding the problem?

29/08/2026

The government says its new measures will help put cowboy builders out of business.

They include Trusted Payments, an app linking payments to completed stages and an optional Approved Code intended to help customers identify trusted traders.

Stopping fraudsters is obviously a good thing. But proper builders rely on deposits to buy materials, pay wages and start the work. Should small businesses be expected to fund customers’ projects while waiting for stages to be approved?

Every payment and variation also goes through a private digital system, potentially pushing cash further out of the industry.

And if the scheme is optional, what stops the real cowboys from simply ignoring it?

I want opinions from both sides: tradespeople and customers, would you use it?

Stage 1 of the media wall at home complete ✅

Today was all about getting the metal framework built and everything boarded out.

The finished plan is two-tone microcement, plaster-in LED profiles and a matching microcement floor that flows straight up into the media wall.

It might not look like much yet, but this is going to be some transformation 👀

Follow along for the next phase!

Nate’s first time plastering on stilts… and to be fair, once he stopped wobbling like he’d had eight pints, he actually smashed it 😂

Arse was twitching the whole time, but the walls came out mint 👏 Would you trust him above head height? 👀

Testing my new stilts went exactly as planned 🤕😂

Full review next week… providing my head recovers.

A quick look at one of the awkward bits before we start skimming the bungalow.

This hip had already been boarded around three times, but the edge was still badly out and shaped like a banana 🍌 . I ended up dubbing it out with bonding, getting it straighter and fixing the bead in place.

A bit of extra preparation, but it should make all the difference once it’s skimmed.

Any plasterers following—how would you have approached it?

Week one complete on the bungalow project 👊

Five days in and pretty much all the stud work is finished. It’s been a big week, but you can really start to see the shape of the finished job now.

Next week we’ll be getting the dabbing finished before moving onto the plastering and finally getting some finished walls!

Looking forward to seeing this one come together. 👌
