*** How to replace a water tank***
When a cold water storage tank is badly corroded, structurally unsound, or no longer fit for purpose, replacement is usually the only reliable long-term fix.
It's not a simple swap-out job though. In a live building β hospital, office, housing scheme β it takes careful planning to keep the water running and avoid disrupting the people who rely on it.
Here's how we approach it at Titan Water:
1) Survey and planning β Full site assessment covering measurements, access, compliance, and structural considerations. Every project gets a bespoke plan before any tools come out.
2) Temporary supply β If the building needs continuous water, we set up a temporary tank or bypass before work starts, planned in advance for a seamless switchover.
3) Drain down and disconnect β The old tank is isolated, drained, and all pipework and fittings safely disconnected.
4) Dismantle and remove β The tank comes out in sections, with waste disposed of responsibly and in line with environmental regulations.
5) Base preparation β We inspect and prepare the base β cleaning, re-levelling, or fitting new supports. Get this wrong and problems follow later.
6) Install the new tank β Sectional GRP, one-piece, or two-piece, built on site to manufacturer guidelines and site constraints.
7) Reconnect pipework β Inlet, outlet, overflow, and drain connections reinstated and pressure-tested.
8) Refill and disinfect β Gradual refill under observation, followed by full disinfection using approved chlorination methods.
9) Commission and hand over β Once it passes inspection, the tank goes live and any temporary supply is removed.
Job complete.
It's a process that blends water hygiene compliance with practical mechanical engineering β which is exactly why the two disciplines need to sit under the same roof.
If you're managing a building where the tank is giving cause for concern, we're happy to take a look.
