⚡ One of the reasons I’m a great advocate of Inspection and Testing of any property, this installation is in a lovely cottage in the hills, has had hardly any electrical work carried out in at least 15 years, and has a fault that could potentially cause a fire. 🔥

Unfortunately, there was no access from above so the ceiling has had some 'minor alterations' in order to find the issue. Don’t worry, we would normally patch and repair the ceiling too, or offer advice and a list of items in order for the customer to repair it nice and easily.

Lightning 1, consumer unit 0.
This could have been worse, but also could have been better, the property is served by overhead lines which were hit by lightning, managing to blow the main RCD to pieces, and likely other electronics in the house, such as the smoking cooker! New regulations would have had a type 1 surge protector fitted which is designed to soak up some of the current in such an event, not all of it, but some, and some can be the difference between a fatality or a night without power, thankfully no one was hurt here and this is now all isolated and safe, ready for a replacement and upgrade.
