Due to continued growth, we are exploring creating a new role within C M Hill Construction and are looking to hear from motivated individuals who feel they could add value to our business.

Role: Operations / Construction Manager
📍 Devon-based with remote working and site visits
🕒 Part-time or Full-time opportunity
💷 Salary/package dependent on experience

Potential responsibilities may include and assisting with;

✅ Day-to-day operational support
✅ Pricing & estimating
✅ Ordering materials & logistics
✅ Networking & business development
✅ Improving efficiency, systems and company growth
✅ Supporting the smooth running of multiple projects

We’re open-minded on backgrounds — you may already work in construction management and be looking for a fresh challenge, or perhaps you’re a working foreman/site supervisor looking to come off the tools and step into a management role.

What we’re looking for:

• Construction knowledge and experience particularly within Groundworks
• Organised and motivated attitude
• Strong communication skills
• Passion for delivering quality work
• Someone who wants to help drive growth and improve systems
• Ability to work independently and take ownership

This role is likely to involve a mixture of remote working, office tasks and site visits across Devon and surrounding areas.

We want someone passionate about construction, growth and helping build something bigger.

Onto the retaining walls and steps at the Sidmouth project for Hankin Construction & joinery LTD

Great work from the team and another nice job where we were awarded the full Groundworks package.

At a later stage we will be installing a complete new foul and storm drainage system.

Structural package completed on this old Dartmoor property.

Works included underpinning, reinforced concrete slab installation, structural reinforcing and formed drainage channels.

A great project for the team in a challenging location with plenty of technical detail involved.

Give the lad a follow and a like. He’s had the minerals to start up his own business from scratch and it’s not easy, especially in today’s turbulent climate. The work (as many of you know) that goes into getting off the ground and building something that you and your family depend on is overwhelming at times. It’s a leap of faith and some of you won’t even give a second thought to how much it means to get a like, share or follow. I always share friends and families business post because I can relate (can’t say the favour is always returned but that’s how I am, I support 😡). ⚠️ Massive labour shortage (again… but worse)

We’re not just short of workers, we’re short of a pipeline that actually works.

Walk onto most sites in 2026 and you’ll hear the same things:
• “Can’t get reliable lads in”
• “No one sticks around long enough to train”
• “We’re flat out, but stretched thin”

And it’s not just chatter.

Industry reports are now saying the UK needs 250,000–260,000+ extra construction workers within the next few years just to keep up with demand.

At the same time:
• A big chunk of the workforce is over 50 and retiring
• The “middle layer” of experienced trades is disappearing
• And entry-level lads are either not coming through, or not staying in the game long enough to learn properly

Even industry analysis is starting to point out the real issue isn’t demand… it’s delivery capability on the ground. Experienced people leaving faster than they’re replaced.

And on forums and social pages, you see the same divide:
Some say it’s a skills crisis.
Others say it’s really a training + retention crisis dressed up as a shortage.

Either way, the result on site is the same:

Sites are rammed.
Deadlines getting tighter.
But no one’s got the time - or money - to bring the next generation through.

So the real question isn’t “where are all the workers?”

It’s: Why isn’t the system producing experienced trades anymore?

Out with the old, in with the new 💪

We’re currently breaking out an existing floor and removing an old terrace to make way for a full upgrade.

The next phase will see the installation of suspended precast concrete planks – delivering a stronger, more durable structure built to last.

Another job where proper prep makes all the difference.
Quality groundwork = quality finish 👌
