Detail Friday | Heritage glazing, upgraded — without losing the character.

One of the highest-impact “quiet” interventions in listed buildings is often the window: retain the original timber frame and sightlines, but carefully rework the glazing build-up to improve performance.

The process (in brief):

— Record + check the existing assembly and condition before intervention.
— Carefully remove single glazing and legacy putty/beads, then prepare/rebate as required for a slim-profile upgrade (minimal visual change, maximum technical gain).
— Install ultra-slim double glazing with Low E inner pane + warm-edge spacer to cut heat loss and help reduce condensation risk at the perimeter — then complete with draughtproofing and repairs matched to existing.

In our modelling, glazing replacement alone contributed ~19% reduction in space-heating demand, with combined fabric measures delivering ~31% overall building load reduction — enabling smaller, more efficient low-carbon heating.

— the decarbonisation is in the details.

A landscape- and heritage-led approach to a sensitive planning submission: working within the Green Belt and Scheduled Ancient Monument constraints, while retaining and re-using locally listed buildings and introducing two new residential blocks that step with the site to form a “village” of shared spaces and calmer residential clusters.

The scheme delivers a 70-bed C2 care home with ensuite rooms, a café, and a secure sensory garden, designed to strengthen wellbeing, wayfinding and connection to the site’s mature tree setting, with biodiversity-focused landscape proposals and green infrastructure.

Our work at Brockley Hill began with a detailed study of context — understanding landscape, heritage, accessibility, and the layered history of a site formerly connected to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Set within the Green Belt and partly over a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the analysis considered topography, mature tree cover, surrounding scale, movement patterns and historic fabric, ensuring the proposals respond sensitively to both visible and below-ground conditions.

This early-stage work plays a critical role in shaping a design that is respectful, grounded, and appropriate to its setting.

Planning application submitted for Brockley Hill, Stanmore — the sensitive redevelopment of a disused group of characterful former Royal National Orthopaedic Hospitals (RNOH)-associated buildings into a C2 residential care home. The scheme brings the site back into active use as a much-needed local facility, while carefully responding to the Metropolitan Green Belt setting and the Scheduled Ancient Monument constraints.

Our proposals combine the retention and re-use of locally listed buildings with two new residential blocks (stepping from three to four storeys with the site topography) to create a coherent “village” arrangement of communal spaces and quieter residential clusters. The care home provides 70 ensuite bedrooms alongside shared amenities including a café, dining and lounge spaces, and a secure sensory garden, with landscape proposals designed to enhance biodiversity and the site’s mature tree setting.

A new staircase introduced from Level 3 as part of the refurbishment of rooms at Keble College, Oxford.

The intervention balances contemporary detailing with the character of the existing building, using stained oak treads and handrails paired with stainless steel balustrading to create a robust, elegant circulation element within the residential setting.

Another one over the line. Peter Newton has recently completed an expert witness role, providing independent design evidence on a complex case.

It is a different pace to project work. More forensic, more focused, but grounded in the same principles. Clear thinking, sound judgement, and a steady approach.

We are an Oxford Living Wage Employer. This means everyone working with us is paid a wage that reflects the real cost of living. It is a simple step, but an important one. Good work should be properly valued.

As a practice, we rely on people. Their time, skill and care shape every project. This commitment supports that in a clear and practical way.
