Back at Falcon Boat Club.

Having previously designed the existing boathouse, we're delighted to be working with Falcon again as a planning application has been submitted for an extension. The additional boat bay will provide much-needed storage space, helping the club accommodate growing demand and support its future ambitions.

It's great to see the building working so well for the club that more space is now needed.

We recently visited@wigengineering_ltd to review the fabrication of the new entry ramp railings for

These images capture the process behind the finished installation: setting out dimensions and angles, cutting and organising individual components, and assembling each section piece by piece. Visiting the workshop provided an opportunity to check progress, review details and appreciate the level of craftsmanship required to translate a design into a physical element.

Successful projects depend on close collaboration between designers, fabricators and makers, and it is always rewarding to see that process in action.

How do you decarbonise a laboratory, an archive, a residential block and a listed mansion?

The answer is: not in the same way.

As part of the decarbonisation programme, we've been assessing a diverse range of buildings to understand how each can respond to future energy and carbon reduction targets while respecting the constraints that make them unique. hivegroup

This set includes:
📍 Institute of Advanced Technology, Begbroke Science Park
📍 Oxford University Book Store, Swindon
📍 Summertown House East Block, Banbury Road
📍 Summertown House Mansion, Banbury Road

From plant-intensive research facilities and environmentally controlled archives to refurbished residential buildings and Grade II listed heritage assets, each assessment required a different balance of fabric performance, building services, operational requirements and conservation considerations.

The work continues across another group of University of Oxford buildings, including Begbroke Hi-Bay, Begbroke Manor House, Christian Building, Norham Gardens, University Museum Lodge, Marston Field Sports Pavilion and others.

Understanding existing buildings is the first step towards delivering meaningful and lasting decarbonisation.

At Original Field, the way we draw is shaped by the story each project needs to tell.

For the Vincent Strudwick Contemplative Garden at Kellogg College, a hand-drawn representation offered the most effective way to communicate the character and experience of the proposed landscape. Rather than focusing solely on technical information, the drawing evokes the atmosphere of the space and the relationship between planting, movement, light and enclosure.

The garden has been designed as a place for quiet reflection and restoration, with carefully considered planting that responds to seasonality, biodiversity and sensory experience. Species have been selected not only for their individual qualities, but for how they interact over time through flowering, structure, colour, scent and habitat value. The result is a richly layered landscape intended to support wellbeing and provide moments of calm within the wider college campus.

Our drawings are never formulaic. Whether hand-drawn, digital or a combination of both, the method of representation adapts to each project, helping communicate the qualities that matter most about a place before it is built.

We're delighted to share that Guy Fielding has successfully passed the Principal Designer (PD) exam and is now officially listed on the RIBA Principal Designer Register.

This is a significant achievement and reflects Guy's commitment to professional excellence, building safety, and delivering high-quality design leadership. We are incredibly proud of this milestone, which also sees him become only the second architect in Oxford to join the register.

As the industry continues to evolve, the Principal Designer role plays an increasingly important part in creating safer, better coordinated projects. We look forward to seeing Guy bring this expertise to our work and clients across the region.

Last week the OFA team swapped drawings and deadlines for an afternoon on the water, making the most of a beautiful Oxford summer. A chance to catch up, unwind, and enjoy some time together outside the studio.

Planning permission has been granted for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Grade II listed orangery at

The proposals carefully restore the Victorian structure while introducing a contemporary intervention that supports its next chapter as a Design & Technology Suite. New additions have been designed to sit respectfully alongside the historic fabric, preserving the character and significance of the orangery while creating a flexible and inspiring space for learning.

The accompanying diagrams explore the relationship between the building's Victorian origins and its future use, illustrating how heritage-led design can secure the long-term future of important historic buildings.
