Heyford Park apprentice, Henry Lay, discovers an exciting career in construction
Henry Lay, 19, didn’t know much about apprenticeships or the construction industry whilst he was at school.
But after going to study at Abingdon and Witney College, he discovered an interest in carpentry, passing his level-one apprenticeship.
And since then, he’s gone on to achieve his level-two qualification and is working towards his level-three with an apprenticeship with Dorchester Living, an award-winning developer.
Henry explains:
“Once I left school, I wanted to be a carpenter, but I didn’t know how to start. I went back to study in college where I learned more about apprenticeships, and I really enjoyed the split between learning in class and working on site.”
He then moved full time to Heyford Park, where he’s been involved in the construction of the new Heyford Hotel, as well as residential properties in other phases of the development.
“When I first came to Heyford Park I was working on a smaller phase alongside my mentor. I then moved on to the hotel, which was really good experience to work on such a different and interesting project.
“For the majority of the time, I’ve had the same mentor throughout my apprenticeship at Heyford Park which means you can build up a good working relationship, and that’s really helpful. It’s been a great way to learn, build confidence, and develop skills for the future. Gaining my Level-three gives me a great platform if I want to go in to Project Management in the future, or to work abroad.”
Henry’s worked alongside other apprentices at Heyford Park and he expects to continue working in the industry in the future.
“It’s nice working with a group of apprentices, as you can provide each other support and talk about your experience. It’s also been great to see a lot of other trades, and everyone I’ve worked with has been very friendly and welcoming.”
