When you’re thinking about buying a property it’s always worth having an electrical inspection, as you could be buying a property with rubber cables, which will likely need an expensive rewire. Vulcanised Indian Rubber cables were installed up to the 1960s and we do still discover them in properties. For less than £400 it’s worth having what could be the biggest investment of your life, your family home, inspected before purchasing.

When you're getting quotes for a consumer unit, it's important to check if the quotes are for a dual split RCD board or an RCBO board, especially if the electrician hasn't stated it in their quote. RCBO's boards a bit more expensive (usually a couple of hundred pound) but they're the much better option. We have only fitted RCBO boards for years.

When doing any install work we always fit 35mm back boxes to enable clients to upgrade their sockets at a later date. 25mm back boxes that some electricians fit are not deep enough for some brands and styles of sockets, especially when it comes to USB's. We've only ever fitted 35mm back boxes as for an extra couple of minutes chasing out a wall, it prevents disruption in the future for the client and saves them money should they wish to upgrade at any point. If you have electrical work planned, make sure your electrician fits 35mm back boxes, not 25!

Here’s the decking area we lit up the other day when we recorded the video showing how we were going to do it. Clients extremely happy 😁 The 2w up-lights in the decking provide lovely mood lighting by highlighting the stone wall. The spike spot in the small bed lights the steps so the client won’t trip down them when it’s dark. It’s always important to get the balance right between ambience and safety on a garden project!

Another garden job using the client just wanted lighting around this new decking area. Nice days work, shame we got caught in the rain but that’s the joys of the British weather!

2 bathrooms with similar designs on this rewire we completed for alongside LED strips in niches and in 1 bathroom also on the ceiling, were cost effective solutions for creating a “high-end” look at this property just outside of East Grinstead.

Power trips? 😩 Follow these tips! 🫡 An electrical fault can be an emergency at worst and a nuisance at best. Dishonest companies know this and they flood google to prey on you panicking. They’ll tell you it’s a call out of X amount, then they’ll do the work and say “that fee was just to turn up, it’s an extra £500 for the work we’ve done.” We despise these sort of companies and we advise that if using google, you pick a local tradesperson. By that, we mean making sure they’re local and not one of the paid ads that says they “serve” your area. These companies target key words like “emergency” and “24/7” and your call goes to a guy who gets a random, unvetted tradesperson to turn up and then tries to rip you off. This isn’t just with electrics either! By following these tips if your power is tripping, you may be able to avoid an expensive emergency call out and be able to make a more informed decision on employing an electrician to fix the problem, in normal hours at standard rates. If an electrician comes to fix the fault and tells you that you need a rewire or consumer unit upgrade, we strongly advise getting a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

The best way to wire 230v garden lighting 👀

We're not judging anyone fitting these, we made the same mistakes many years ago and we learnt the hard way.
When you're installing light fittings that will be exposed to the elements, it's important to find fittings that are proven to stand the test of time.
Most 230v garden lights are cheaper than 12v alternatives but that's for a reason.
We obviously can't dictate to our clients what fittings they have installed but we always give them advice and our brand of choice is Nitelux, not just because the fittings are quality but also because we have built a relationship with their team and we cross-reference our designs with them to ensure that we fit the best product for each location.

If you are planning on having landscaping work carried out and you have your plans/drawings, send them over and will provide you with a FREE lighting design. No obligation, no catch, no sneaky marketing tricks. We're that confident in our design process that you'll want us to do the installation.

A lovely en-suite shower room we recently finished for RK Build in Oxted, Surrey.
LED strip under the wall hung unit and also in the shower niche is a lovely feature. We installed a pir sensor in the ceiling the switch the LED strips so when the client needs to use there loo in the evening, the feature led strip lighting comes on without the bright down-lights, this prevents waking the client up too much and also prevents the extractor fan coming on.
