Important Notice for Drone Operations in Scotland During Bird Breeding Season
At D.A.S.E. Limited, with over 3,100 hours of flight experience, we emphasize safety and legal compliance with CAA regulations.
In Scotland, the bird breeding season, which includes nesting and egg-laying, generally runs from early February to the end of July, with the most sensitive period from late February to early May when birds are actively laying and incubating eggs.
Some species, like birds of prey such as ospreys and certain crossbills, may start breeding as early as February, and their nests require protection year-round. The main breeding activity occurs from late March to April, with peak nesting during this sensitive period, and ends for many species by July, though some continue into August. Breeding times vary among species, so always check with local authorities before flying in sensitive areas.
Aerial operations with hobbyist drones, such as Mini series models, can pose significant risks not only to nearby people but also to wildlife and especially vulnerable nestlings.
Flying over nesting sites during these times can disturb or harm wildlife and may lead to aggressive behaviour from defending birds.
We strongly advise all drone operators to be aware of local wildlife seasons and regulations to ensure safety, legality, and respect for wildlife. Let’s work together to keep our skies safe and our environment protected!
