20,000 people following our journey. Now we’re making your own journey easier to follow. 🏡

We’ve passed 20,000 followers, and I want to say a sincere thank you. Every comment, share, question and recommendation has helped us reach this point.

To celebrate, I’d like to introduce something we’ve been developing behind the scenes: the Microhomes Client Portal.

Choosing a home is exciting. But the process that follows matters just as much.

Where are we with planning? What happens next? Is this the latest drawing? What do I need to approve?

You should be able to find those answers easily.

Our new portal gives each client a private project workspace, bringing together:

✓ Project progress gantt, see the stages from planning through to completion, with completed tasks, upcoming milestones and planned dates.

✓ A clear project summary: a short update explaining where things stand and what we’re working towards next.

✓ Drawings and documents: access your planning, building warrant and construction information in one place, organised into clearly labelled sections.

✓ Straightforward approvals: see which documents need your attention, review them and record your approval or acknowledgement.

✓ Budget information: view your current project figures, explanations of changes, stage payments and uploaded invoices.

✓ Project notifications: receive an email when information needs your attention, with optional phone alerts when enabled.

✓ Your architect’s contact details: so you know who to speak to when you need help.

It also gives the consultants, contractors and suppliers involved in your project access to the information shared with them, helping us keep everyone coordinated.

It’s free for our clients and accessible on a phone, tablet or computer. You can save it to your phone’s Home Screen for easy access.

For me, this is another step towards making the whole Microhomes process clearer, more organised and easier to navigate, from the first conversations to your finished home.

Following on from our last post about housing in later life, we wanted to explore what it means to have a home that fits your next chapter.

The cost of a home isn’t measured only by its purchase price. It’s also measured in years of mortgage payments, energy bills, maintenance, and the time required to look after it.

Microhome No.1 is our simplest answer: a complete, permanent one-bedroom home, intelligently designed within just 40m².

Would you downsize your home if it meant becoming part of a small community? 🏡

Here’s an early look at a project we’re starting to work on near Beith, exclusively for older people who feel ready for a smaller, more manageable home.

The idea is simple: a small cluster of single-storey homes, where you can enjoy your own space and independence, with neighbours nearby and the opportunity to build friendships.

Less house to look after. More time for family, friends and the things you enjoy.

For many people, downsizing is about choosing a home that better suits the next chapter of life—and having a sense of belonging matters just as much as the home itself.

We’re still at an early stage, but we’re looking forward to developing this idea and sharing its progress.

Today, I took the message about Microhomes and Scotland’s housing shortage to people who can help make a difference.

Speaking at the Scottish Rural and Islands Housing Association conference in Dundee, I had the opportunity to address many of the key decision makers involved in public housing provision across Scotland.

My message was simple: behind every housing shortage statistic is a person struggling to find somewhere to call home.

Someone trying to stay in the community they grew up in. A family under financial pressure. Someone looking for a manageable home near their children and grandchildren.

I spoke about the part smaller, thoughtfully designed homes can play — easing financial burdens, reducing maintenance and creating more room in our lives for the things that matter.

For some, that means a realistic route to a home of their own. For others, it means choosing a simpler, more intentional way of living.

Those of you who follow our work will know how much this matters to us. Today was an opportunity to bring that message into the room with people helping to shape Scotland’s housing future.

A home should help us live better. That’s the message I wanted to share.
