A staircase is often judged from above. This one is perhaps best understood from beneath.

From this angle, the two flights of the Old Mill staircase reveal the full complexity of their geometry. The soffit flows through a series of changing curves, while the fine joint lines show how each limestone element contributes to the continuous form.

The post-tensioned engineering remains concealed within the stone. What we see is limestone, light and a sculptural soffit that appears almost effortless.

Designed, manufactured and installed by Carvero for the conversion of the Grade II-listed Old Mill near Peterborough, working closely with WGP Architects.

Stone carries a different kind of presence.

At Lantern House, the staircase rises through the home in broad, sculptural sweeps of natural stone. From below, the curve, the mass, and the precision of its construction reveal themselves gradually, creating an intriguing contrast between strength and lightness.

A small glimpse of what is to come in Rothley.

This stone staircase is now nearing completion, and the character of the work is beginning to show.

The final stages are still ahead — some grouting, polishing, sealing, and the surrounding finishes — but the proportions, mouldings, and quiet presence of the natural stone are already becoming clear.

Hand-carved and installed by our Stonmeason team at Carvero in Leicestershire.
