We’re proud to see the Bain & Irvine story featured in Scottish Construction Now as we mark our 80th anniversary.

It’s been a great opportunity to reflect on our transition from a traditional heritage contractor in 1946 to the forward-looking business we are today.

We've been working hard behind the scenes recently to expand our team, upgrade our digital systems, and invest in the next generation through new apprenticeships.

We are incredibly proud of our history, but we're even more excited about where we're heading next. A big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the decades.

As Bain & Irvine approaches its 80th anniversary in 2026, the roofing contractor - originating in Peebles and now bolstered by an Edinburgh-based office - is celebrating more than its storied heritage. Under a new management team led by managing director Jamie Anderson, the business has undergon

We recently had the absolute pleasure of working on a beautiful family home, nestled in the lovely village of Whitekirk. It’s a stunning Category A listed building with a truly fascinating story. Built from the remains of medieval pilgrim's houses, it was extended by the Baird family in the 1600s to serve as an agricultural store, sharing a close, centuries-old connection with the historic St Mary's Parish Church right next door.

A historic property like this naturally needs regular, gentle care to keep it standing strong for generations to come. The Bain & Irvine team was there to carry out maintenance and to reseal the raggles down all lead watergates with a polysulphite mastic. Keeping on top of this is so important to protect the incredible fabric of the building from the potential impact of heavy rain and harsh weather over time.

The roof itself is a real piece of traditional craftsmanship, covered in incredibly heavy stone slates, often known as Scottish flagstones, and framed by classic Scottish crow-stepped gables. In the photos, you can see Brian holding one of these hefty original tiles to give you an idea of their sheer scale, alongside doing his usual careful quality control checks to make sure everything is absolutely spot on.

We couldn't resist snapping a few wider shots while we were up on the roof, capturing the rolling countryside and the magnificent St Mary's Parish Church that the house has shared this land with for hundreds of years. As an NFRC Heritage registered team, we feel incredibly lucky to be trusted to help look after such special pieces of our national history.

Yesterday, the team kicked off our trip with a truly special visit to the stunning Holker Hall & Gardens, our first stop before heading onto the Burlington Stone quarry.

Stepping onto the estate is like walking right into an amazing piece of history. The Hall was originally built back in 1604, and we had the privilege of being guided inside by a fantastic local historian. We got to explore the new wing of the building, which was beautifully rebuilt following a devastating fire in 1871.

It was great to meet Allen Gibb and Ian Ramsay during the visit, and to be personally greeted by The Hon. Lucy Cavendish. As the current custodian, head of the Holker Group, and owner of Burlington Stone, her family's deep connection to the local slate industry is fascinating. She actually still resides in the original 1604 section of the Hall where she was born!

A massive thank you to Lady Cavendish and everyone associated with Burlington Stone for their incredibly warm and generous hospitality. It was the perfect start to our trip.

On Friday, the Bain & Irvine team headed down to the Intercontinental London O2 for the 2026 NFRC UK Roofing Awards, and what an absolutely fantastic event it was.

It is always a privilege to get together with the wider roofing community to celebrate the very best in our trade. From heritage slating to complex commercial cladding, the sheer quality of craftsmanship on display across all 16 categories this year was truly inspiring.

It was brilliant catching up with so many familiar faces, making some great new connections, and hearing from NFRC National President, Colin McCorquodale, about his vision and the ongoing support for our industry.

A massive congratulations to all the highly deserving nominees and the overall winners who took home the trophies on Friday. It is your hard work and dedication to doing things the right way that keeps the UK roofing industry moving forward! 👏

We are incredibly proud to share that our Managing Director, Jamie Anderson, has officially been awarded the highly prestigious title of NFRC HERITAGE CRAFT MASTER.

Bain & Irvine Ltd is now officially listed on the National Heritage Roofing Contractors Register, with Jamie recognised for his outstanding expertise in carrying out traditional roof covering work.

This is a remarkably rare achievement. The NFRC Heritage Craft Master accreditation isn't handed out lightly; it is reserved for a very exclusive group of tradespeople who have proven their dedication to traditional craftsmanship. It is a vital standard designed to protect and preserve the time-honoured skills needed to properly look after historic buildings.

Jamie is absolutely delighted to have his years of hard work recognised at this level.

"I’m absolutely over the moon with this," Jamie shared. "I’ve always loved working on older roofs and keeping the traditional ways of doing things alive. Getting this nod from the NFRC means the world to me, and it’s a proud moment for the whole team here. It just goes to show how much we care about doing a proper job and looking after Scotland's historic buildings the right way."

Continuous learning and finding the best materials for our clients is what keeps us ticking!

Last week, our Senior Surveyor, Tony Benton, visited the team at to find out more about their innovative product ranges. A massive thank you to Chloe Mulvey and Craig McLanachan for the incredibly warm welcome and for organising such a brilliant hands-on demonstration.

Tony got stuck right in, gaining practical experience heat welding the Rhenofol single-ply membrane. He also had a great time exploring and comparing Rubberseal’s liquid waterproofing solutions, including their specialist Liquiflex Pro system and the zero-isocyanate Roofers No1 range. To round things off, they took a close look at EPDM self-adhesive membranes to discuss alternative, highly effective solutions for different roofing applications.

Staying up to speed with the latest systems and technologies means we can always recommend the absolute perfect fit for your property.

Big thanks to the NFRC for featuring our apprentice Daniel. Our apprentices are a huge part of the Bain & Irvine family – bringing energy, fresh ideas and a real passion for the trade. It’s brilliant to see more young people getting involved and building the skills that will shape the future of our industry. Proud to invest in great people like Daniel 👏

During Scottish Apprenticeship Week earlier this year, we invited our Members to share their apprentice success stories.

Bain and Irvine apprentice, Daniel, told us how his apprenticeship has helped him gain confidence, learn from other experienced roofers, and develop his skills.

"I chose roofing because it offers hands-on practical work where I can see the direct results of what I do."

There is nothing quite like receiving wonderful feedback from a client. We are incredibly thankful to Alex at LARCH (Leith and Restalrig Church) for taking the time to share their experience with us.

When our team attended Pilrig Church to carry out a full roof assessment, our main priority was making sure the client felt completely supported and informed. For us, making a strong first impression and delivering genuine customer care is just as important as the technical survey itself. We always take the time to walk our clients through our findings, clearly explaining exactly what their ongoing maintenance schedule should look like and highlighting any areas they need to be mindful of for the future.

If you are looking for a roofing contractor who takes the time to explain the details and put your mind at ease, we would love to help. Get in touch to arrange a thorough survey of your property today:
